My friend's new boss has found an apt behind a train station in Gumi.

He is worried about losing his peaceful sat and sun mornings to the sounds of trains and announcements. Also during the week, the last train is 12.30am....

His co-worker at his current job tells him it wont be noisy as they have a 'sound / noise wall' either side of the tracks.

Anyone have any idea about this?

He has a very short time (2 days) before he needs to move in and she is having a hard time finding another place....

It will be a 2nd floor stuido in a villa right behind the station.

I live 4 blocks from a train station and I can hear it if the windows are open. I would try to look for another place.

Where is that? And do they have the 'noise wall' at that station?

Four blocks is quite far from the train station. Does this mean four alleys or four proper roads? Has your friend visited the new place?

Not to be captain obvious, but why not go stand next to the apartment and let your ears do the research?

I live about half a mile for a train station but 0 yards from the tracks. With the windows closed I hear nothing. When they're open in nice weather like we are having now I can hear the trains go by but it's not loud. I do think the walls help.

Go where the apartment is and hang out for a bit and judge for yourself.

My old flat backed on to a busy train station on line 1. It was a newly built block, and my flat was 13 floors up. With my windows closed, I couldn't hear a thing. I think generally if the building is reasonably new (under 10 years), the buildings insulation and windows should cancel out most of the noise from outside. The building standards are much lower in older buildings, so you might not get as much noise reduction there.

In saying this, I agree with the other posters - you should go and have a listen for yourself.

I live less than one block from an underground train station in Daejeon -- I would also say it's silent.

And what do we call underground trains to distinguish them, thus avoiding superfluous comments?

They have sound proof barriers if they're above ground....EXCEPT KTX linbs(light tourquise blue)..only some of them have it.

I wouldn't worry...subway station real estate is extremely valuabe for this reason.
