I just moved into a new place that has a really bad old lock (the deadbolt doesn't even work) and it's been occupied by other foreigners for years and years before. I'm not too much of the paranoid type, but I'd love to put in a new electronic one just to put my mind at ease and so I don't have to bother with a set of keys.

What's the etiquette here? Do I need to tell my landlord or can I just do it on my own? And are these easy to install by yourself or do you need a guy to come in and do it?

When I got one, the sticker price included the guy installing it. (I think they started around w50000.) Took him just 5 minutes but he knew what he was doing & had the right tools at hand.

People change locks all the time. Re: disclosing your code, I give it out only on a need to know basis. Its easy to reset.

Since you're just RENTING the place, ask the landlord to pay for it if the deadbolt doesn't work. I know I would.
