Hi everyone! I finally got my CRC back and am about ready to go get it apostilled. I live in California and I've read in past forum threads that you can just get your CRC apostille done at the CA Secretary of State office (even though it should be done by the people in DC). I was wondering if this still the case. I don't want to drive 5 hours down only to be told it is not possible...
Thanks in advance!
Best,

Yes, you can get the apostille at the secretary of state in LA.
That's what I did a month ago. |

They don't apostille the FBI background check, because they don't have the authority to do that...BUT you write on a piece of paper that you certify that this is the original background check issued to you by the FBI (after that same statement has been notarized. Then send your notarized statement and your CRC to the Secretary of State, and all will be peachy keen. |

When I graduated from SD state I had to get my FBI background check apostille and my degree apostille. From SD, I didn't want to drive and be stuck in traffic esp on the 5 freeway. Plus, gas is super expensive in California. Also, I had a part time job, couldn't take time off. I heard if the notary doesn't do it correctly, you can get it rejected.
So I mailed my original degree and original FBI background check to Apostille Pros : www.apostillepros.com
They process the same day they receive the document as long as it get to them by noon. I mailed it to them on Wed., and it arrived on Thursday at 10:30am. They had it process on Thurs. and I got them back on Friday by FedEx. Also, they notified me by email it was getting shipped out on Thursday with a tracking number. Everything was accepted by K-Immi. The original degree, they just sent back to me along with the apostille documents. They apostille the original fbi check and a copy of the degree because that's what korean immigration wanted.

Just call the CA secretary of state's office and ask them. IIRC they will apostille a notarized copy of the CRC. But they won't just apostille it if it was authenticated with the FBI seal and signature.
When do you need the apostille done? I've done the apostillepros thing as well, and they do it very fast, but I recommend that option only if you absolutely need the documents done in a very short time. And if you want them to get your document apostilled by the Dept of State you'll have to pay a lot more. |

A note of caution!
The Sec. of State will only certify a SIGNED CBC. On a couple of occasions, I got the computer printout from Sacramento DOJ (despite specific instructions to the contrary) and the SOS office wouldn't touch it.
If you got just the printout, call the DOJ at (916) 227-4557. They will send you a new one with a signature.
A note about apostilles for diplomas-
The LA SOS office will not certify an out-of-county notarized diploma without the county certification. If it is within LA, they will send you to the county clerk waaaay out on Imperial Hwy. If it is from outside LA, you will need to go to or send to that county's clerk for certification. |

I don't know where you live, but the Sacramento Sec of State office has fewer hoops to jump through to get an apostille than the LA office. You can read the details on their website.
Note that I've only had my diploma copies apostilled there, so I can't verify whether they do the CBC or not. The diploma apostilles were easy in and out, it only took about five minutes total.
Let us know what you do and if it works. |

You don't have to do the fbi check in dc. Its been this way for more than 2-3 years now. The letter from the fbi is confusing. It say you have to get apostille from the department of state, but you don't have to. The reason why they give those letter is to instruct people where they can get them, but its not mandatory for south korea. Korean immi have always accepted state apostille if your state allow it. If the state doesn't do it, go to a state that does. California is one of them that allow apostille on cbc.
