Lets say I want to transfer 116,000 Won (~$100 USD) to the United States so I can pay off a bill back home. How much would I be charged to convert from the Won to USD? |

About 2% for the currency exchange (over and above what you see as the internet rate).
The buy and sell rates are posted in the banks and there is no additional commission.
Sending the money home is another matter.
If you send a cashiers check, money order or just cash wrapped in paper it won't be bad. If you send by bank wire then it will cost you between $10-$50.

Sending such a small amount home would be crazy. The fees would be a huge percentage of the total, as Tom said.
I guess if you're here now it might be too late to set up, but usually everyone has online banking from their home country, also maybe Paypal or something. I've only had something I couldn't pay either of those ways once or twice in the past decade. I mailed a paper check (written on my home country bank) when necessary. |
