I have been reading about how prevalent excessive drinking is in Korea and how tolerated it is. Since I am over blacking out, will I find that problematic? I enjoy having 2-3 cocktails in a night, but never enough to feel bad the next morning. Are there any good excuses that work to get me out of feeling pressured to drink besides "just saying no"? |

Nurse two or three and you can probably bail on a work dinner at a reasonable hour. |

Tell people you have to go to the gym tomorrow, early in the morning or say you just got out of rehab.

Just say no. That's all you have to do. |

Say no....its something Koreans do all the time. Just be polite, mention other engagements...
But...2 or 3 drinks a night? |

Did you have a drink or two?

Oh, and to make myself useful, I recommend you stay away from straight soju and if you feel like drinking then yeah, have a couple of bottles of beer. Most of the Korean drinking establishments don't do cocktails, and the way soju is consumed is fast and furious, not for everyone. |

best excuse is family related. say you have to call/skype your parents/grand-parents. it's the one thing that will make them back off. |

Haha, I usually have two or three to get warmed up before going out. I remember this one time. It was the directors birthday. We drank with him until 6AM and then he drove us to school so we could teach our morning classes. I was so drunked up. My students were laughing their arses off. Fighting! |

These have helped me stay (more) sober during drinking:
Always keep your glass half-full. A full glass means cheers. An empty glass means refills.
Learn the pace of a drinking night and go to the bathroom when you expect a cheers.
Don't be afraid to spill a drink (not on you or someone else) if you're struggling to avoid booze.
Learn all the Korean drinking games and get good at them.
EAT EAT EAT before you go, or as soon as you get to the restaurant. Helps keep the alcohol in you do drink at bay.
Find any kind of excuse to avoid soju. Much harder to get drunk on beer. |
