Okay I bought a guitar a few hours ago, and its a model called "Linus". I was told its a Korean handmade guitar thats not very well known. It plays nice enough from what i could tell in the shop and at home, But when i removed a clear sticker from the back i noticed that written on the sticker faintly was "Made in China".
Does anyone know whether Linus are Korean as the guy in the shop said or Chinese?
Can't see why he'd lie cos he was pushing this guitar over an identically priced Chinese one on the basis that it was Korean, thus better quality.(and he wasn't the owner so not like a price margin would drive him to lie) |

There WAS a Korean guitar manufacturer named Linus based in Yangju City, Gyeonggi-do, that had a few decent reviews. Judging from the fact that their business website is no longer operational as well as from the lack of recent referrals - say, within last two years or so - I speculate that they have gone bust in the early days of the Credit Crunch. |

Thanks! Any chance you've a link to those reviews? I'm struggling to find any info.
Anyone else know anything about them? That sticker has thrown me! |

i bought some strings a while ago, and the dude was pushing them pretty hard - claiming they were "made in korea, so very good".
i turned the pack over, and it said "made in china". |

isisaredead : I'd understand him lying if it was just to make the sale but he showed me about ten guitars and this was one of the things he mentioned about this one at the beginning. And towards the end when i was choosing between my one and another solid top chinese one he recommended the one i bought cos it was Korean. They were both identical in price.
So i can't see why he'd lie, but the made in china sticker shouldnt be on there if he told the truth now should it!?! |

I wouldn't worry about it. Made in Korea or Made in China doesn't really matter.
Lot's of Korean factories pump out very low-quality stuff. Lots of Chinese factories make very high-quality stuff. It just depends on the design and parts spec given to the factory by whichever company designs the guitar and will then put their name on it.
It's possible that Linus was/is a Korean company who were making a loss manufacturing in Korea so they moved their manufacturing to a Chinese factory. That factory will make whatever guitar they want to whatever quality level they want.
If the guitar plays well, doesn't fall apart and sounds good......that's all you need. |

I like the guitar so far so i'm happy in that regards, but to say its HANDMADE IN KOREA, when it was actually China is just bugging me. It's more to do with wehther i will ever give repeat business to that store, and to know what i have.
Also for when i go to sell it on when i leave i want to give the next buyer accurate info. If it is handmade in Korea then it's probably better built than China because Koreans have had a lot more experience than Chinese with guitars. |

I have had the same thing happen to me several times.
Clerk: Made in KOREA! Made in KOREA!
I point at the Made in China tag, frown, and walk out of the shop. I just always make it a point to never go in the shop again. |

Maybe he lied simply to make the sale. In his mind, 'made in Korea' probably sounds much better. Either that or he just didn't know his own products. If this was at the Nagwon arcade, anything's possible. |

On a somewhat related note, can anyone throw out a good place in central Seoul to buy nylon strings? I can get to Hongdae in a pinch, and figure that might be a good place to start. This thread reminded me that I lugged this thing over here for a reason, but I can't recall seeing anything off the top of my head. I might need some tuning work done in the future as well, if I decide I should care less about pissing off my neighbors. I'll do a search, but if anyone recommends somewhere location specific, let me know. |

You want to go to the place the above poster metioned: Nakwon Sangga, just outside the main touristy street in Insa Dong. It's a (unfortunately over-priced) musician's paradise. Failing that, any musical instrument store in Korea will have nylon strings since the guitar of choice in Korea is the classical. You may even find some in the crappy little stationery stores you see around schools. |
