At least, according to some correspondence of the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Korea:
Quote:
Korea's foreign ministry came under fire on Friday after it was found that some of its diplomatic cables and online publications failed to use "East Sea" to identify the waters separating the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

The gaffes come as Korea is calling for the international community to simultaneously use both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" to identify the body of water amid a long-running tussle between Seoul and Tokyo over the name.

However, some diplomatic cables and documents posted on Web sites of the foreign ministry and its Japanese mission only used the "Sea of Japan" name, according to an investigation by Yonhap News Agency.

Anyone ever get bothered by "The Indian Ocean", or "English Channel"?

When Korea becomes a leader in the true sense of the word (try making some of your own decisions rather than slavishly following the west and aspiring to be a G-7 type country), it'll get more respect.

If anyone from my country ever started going on about the "Gulf of America", I'd rightly consider him or her a shallow, egotistical, nationalistic fool.

If your national pride is based on the names of geographic locations and features, something is very wrong.

Indeed. You guys call the gulf of Mexico such because it is between you and Mexico.

A perfect sollution to all this bs would be for Japan to call it 'The sea of Korea' and for Korea to call it The sea of Japan.'

Internationally it could be refered to as 'The Japan-Korean Sea.' based purely on alphabetical order.

Nobody loses pride and their is no inferance of either country being held in higher rank than the other. Even more so, that each decides to call it the sea of it's neighbour would be much more friendly and less egotistical.

The French call the English Channel - La Manche. I don't know if the French are bothered by the name "English Channel". But they have their own name for it. Just sayin...

Tres droll, mon amie.

It means 'The sleeve.'

Interestingly enough Italians back in the 1400's called it 'Canalites Anglie' and the Spanish, Greeks and Portuguese still refer to it as 'La manche.'

Sorry. I couldn't resist. (And I had no idea what it meant in French).

Apparently you've haven't heard of the whole "Japan renamed Korea from 'Corea' just so J could come before K" ubber sensitive nationalistic propaganda. If they ever called it the Japan-Korean Sea, Korea would start lobbying the world and crying to be recognized as Corea so it would be the Corean-Japan Sea. Whether it's this or the Dokdo nonsense, this country wastes more time and resourced arguing over trivial things, when it should be working with Japan in every way possible so as to offer a balance to China.

weso, yeah, I agree. But if they both chose to call it the sea of the other country, I imagine (perhaps idealisticaly) that whomever's name came first alphabetically wouldn't matter.

And to be fair to Korea, they did originally spell it with a 'C' both at home and internationally.

Maybe. But the evil Japanese occupiers are gone now. If they wanted to spell it with a C, there is literally nothing to stop them. So why keep spelling it with a K and continue to b*tch and moan about it, if not to just have another thing to whine and cry about?

well, I would take a guess that as the Japanese empire grew and and Korea became internationally recognised as spelt with a 'K' and then after the Japanese empire fell, Korea wanted to be continued to be regonised as the same. or maybe it was the fault of the victors of war (the allies) that bequethed her such internationally.

But you're right, if they were happy to be spelt with a K, then stop bitchin. If they're not happy, then change back to a C and get done with it.

Sheeit, I can't make no sense of it. (that's 'sheeit' as pronounced by Bunk from The Wire.)
