|
|
Hi all,
I'm heading to Seoul in 2/3 weeks to teach at a Hogwan. I'm a freelance journalist and want to get some part-time/freelance work with the English newspapers while I'm there. Will the school mind if I do this?
And if anyone works or writes for any newspaper I'd appreciate it if you could tell me how to go about getting freelance work.
Thanks |

School could probably care less (might even like it as a marketing tool when talking to parents). I think your problem will be Visa related. I know they have relaxed the regulations recently to make it easier for people to take a 2nd teaching job with the school's permission but the E2 is specifically for teaching your native language I think.
Not 100% sure though. Ttompatz will be able to clarify I'm sure!
P.S What kind of stuff have you written in the past? Anything we might know? |

Thanks litebear. I mainly do finance but have done everthing else too. Although I would just be happy to get with a newspaper there. I didn't know that about the visa so I'll check it out. Hopefully Ttompatz can clarify it.
Cheers |

The school may mind and your visa will not let you without permission from immigration. |

So will I just ask the school when I get there? As it's not definite should I say it to immigration when I get there or wait till I get soem work? |

If the opportuntity arises you need to contact immigration and talk to them. The school needs to give its permission but it doesn't over-rule immigration. If immigration says no then you can't do it. They are the final word on the matter. |

This is correct. Immigration issues the visa therefore they have the final say. If they give you permission though, you will still need the school's permission as well. |

ONE-OFF freelance writing is a non-issue to immigration as would be a minor stipend for it.
The same can be said for one-off appearances on TV with a stipend for your work.
If you plan to join their staff as a free-lance writer or regular (paid) contributor then you need to have the additional workplace added to your ARC. The fee is 60k won and you also need: letter of permission from your primary sponsor, copy of new contract, copy of current contract, work schedules for both, ARC, passport, application, new employer business registration.

OP- ask Smee.
He runs a blog and he has submitted writing for newspapers while he taught here. But TUM & calendar are both correct, you need permission from immigration if you intend to earn extra. |

Unless of course you run afoul of someone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Brian in Jeollado run into some trouble when he accepted money for a published article? IMO, if you keep your nose clean, you'll be okay. If you get to stepping on toes, you better dot those T's and cross those I's...
OP, if you keep your eyes open, one of the major newspapers is hiring every few months for English reporters it seems. Last month, the Joongang Ilbo was hiring, a few months back I believe I saw ads in the Korea Times, etc... Consider scrapping the E2 plans and just getting a job working for the paper instead? |

Under the CURRENT rules for the addition of a place of employment, with the permission of your employer/sponsor, the duty is to report the addition within 14 days of commencement (rather than permission in advance).

Well I would advise coming over on the E-2 and planning a transfer after you've done 6 months and have located a job that wants to hire, in my experience gigs of this nature (writing/editing) prefer in-country applicants. But yes, from time to time such work is advertised, and I'm sure professional experience will boost the OP's resume to the top of the pile.
OP can also devote some time to Korean studies while on the E-2, some editing jobs strongly prefer to hire someone with Korean language ability. I don't think the newspapers care but studying Korean wouldn't hurt regardless. |

Yep. He didn't get permission from his employer which is what he got nailed on.

Though it should be noted that Brian has quiet a bit of enemies around Korea, and this was not the first time he had been harassed due to stuff he published. So if you are going to write in Korean newspapers, be careful. |

Thanks for all the advice. Din't think it would be that much an issue. How likely/unlikely will immigration be to let me take on a second job? |

Not that difficult PROVIDED you are not working for a public school (government workers are forbidden to take a 2nd job that is not also a government job).
