I know that there are a few runners on this board, so thought this was worth mentioning.

Nike is hosting the "We Run" series here in Seoul on October 23rd (Sunday). Yes, the same day as the Chuncheon marathon.

It's a 10k race starting at 4PM. There is a concert after the race at 6PM.

The entrance fee is 20,000 won and 30,000 people can register.

Registration opened this past Monday. I think it will remain open until they reach 30,000 participants.

You can find information and signup at: http://www.werunseoul.com/

Is anyone running this? Has anyone run the previous years? I believe it's been going on since 2008.

Wow, are you serious? That's insane.

Thanks for the heads up though.

As an avid runner I ran quite a few marathons and Seoul was one of the interesting ones. I would suggest it to those runners who enjoy marathons or even half marathons!

Great experience but they cap the race at 5 hours meaning after that (unless it changed) the marathon support staff are gone. Thats how it was when I ran it a couple of years ago. The website advised runners who take longer than 5 hours to take the bus to finish the day. Maybe that has changed however.

On a side note, Korea is pretty great for cross-country running. I know it was one of the things I loved about Busan for example.

this is a 10k race the op was talking about, just to clairify

and yeah most full marathons are capped at 5 hours for some reason, its not like there is a lot of support on the courses anyhow though nobody watches and sometimes water stops shut down way before they need to. With that said Chuncheon's full is capped at 7 or 8 hours. However the last 2 races I've done where there was full going on people were able to go 5 1/2-6 hours without much problem. I know because one of the runners in my club does a 5 1/2 full.

Only big gripe I have with races here is foreigners tend to be treated like zoo animals more than usual which can sometimes be good or bad. Today for example our club got free entry and a free bus to a race in Gapyeong but the poking etc was worse than usual

I take great exception to this. The air quality is TERRIBLE and affects runners quite a bit. That coupled with the unpredictable nature of Korean drivers makes Korea a pretty bad place for running.

Can you give us some more information on this run club?

Well I did say Cross Country running not street running. I also lived in Busan and the air quality was decent if you ran off rush hour. Also lots of hills for great hill workouts.
Now the cross country running was great in the nearby hills were there are no cars by the way. Wink

He said Korea, not Seoul. Wink

Regarding We Run Seoul - I did it last year and it was a good time. Scenic run along the Han River with bands and Djs performing on stages set up every few kilometers.

I am doing the race again this year and whats reported is right - the race sold out very quickly. I hear though that they reserve some spots for foreigners (they did last year) so its worth sending an email.

Maybe we can turn this into a more useful thread since a fair amount of people seem to run in Korea.

Since I failed to deliver on the We Run Seoul, let's try this again:

It seems there's a race December 3rd in Seoul:

I'm going to (try) and register tomorrow for the full.

Thanks for the information. I sent an email and will let everyone know if it works.

Can you tell a little bit more? I ran the Jeju marathon in June. I didn't have any problems. Well, one problem was the students that volunteered sometimes tried to talk to me too much and I couldn't ignore them (I felt bad) so it was difficult running and talking when we got farther away.

Some people get it. Some people don't.

Either way, thank you for your very informative post. I now know what DaHu thinks about organized races. Just another tick on the ol' Bucket List.

Maybe you haven't spent much time in the Korean "Countryside" but I can tell you that the air pollution and general hectic feeling on the streets is on par with or worse than most large north american cities. At least in Asan.

Well to balance this out I ran all over Korea. Brought my shoes and running clothes on each of our numerous family visits in smaller cities and towns while I lived in Korea. Even in Busan, off the rush hours, the air quality was not bad at all. Thenh again, I suppose it depends where you come from as well. I mean I was born in Toronto and lived in large cities my entire life...so air pollution was part of daily life. If for example someone came from a rural area back home or a small town then the comparison with Seoul would be pretty stark!

Still, in my experience, outside of the major cities, running cross country was even better. Gyungju for example has fantastic trails to run.
