|

I've been gone 6 months, and the two Turkish places in Hongdae are now closed. That sucks! Anybody know any others in Sinchon/ Hongdae? I know there's one in Ewha but it wasn't open last night. Not sure if it was closed just for the day or permanately. And I know there are a few in Itaewon also. |

There's still Istanbul Kebab by the station, last I checked. And isn't Mr Kebab still there?
Also, try going there on a weekend night when all the kebab trucks come out. They make the best kebabs. |

Both the Kebab shops are still there. I ate at Mr. Kebab yesterday and I pass by the other one on my way to the subway everyday.
Or are you talking about proper Turkish restaurants? |

Forget the kebab places- it seems I am tripping over them every weekend I visit Hongdae!
What happened to the plethora of hookah bars? Gr8 looks like a woman's bar and the other 3 alternatives to that place just closed up |

I was really curious so I just swung by and it does look like they closed up shop. Weird. When I went yesterday the meat was just about finished. Thought it was kind of strange. Doesn't look like it's temporary either as the tables and what not were moved around inside as well. |

might not be any real profits, I mean rent is high now in hongdae, staff, product, rates etc.. I mean you have to sell a lot of kebabs at 4000 won to make real money. a lot of competition in the area. |

What time did you go by there yesterday? Because when I went yesterday it looked long abandoned. |

There is a really good Indian hookah bar in Insadong. The place is decorated like the palace from Indiana Jones Temple of Doom. Although I haven't been there since I got back, I don't imagine them closing as they were always packed. |

Is there really any wonder half of these places shut down? A few of them had moderately decent business and within 2 years we had "Kebab Wars" in Itaewon and Hongdae with new shops opening up side-by-side to get a piece of the action. People simply got burned out. It used to be a novelty and a treat to see a guy carving on the side of the street, but now it's an annoyance as every venue you walk out of has some guy barking. |

I have no clue what you're talking about. Most Kebab places I've been to, the owners are incredibly friendly and cool. One of them used to frequently give me free food that wasn't on the menu. As far as I know there are only 2 in Itaewon and 1 in Hongdae, doesn't really seem like a war to me. I'm not counting the fly-by-night street vendors.
I think the reason for the closings is that the food hasn't really caught on with locals and maybe never will. But who knows. |

It actually might have been Monday, but I know I went this week hah. Sucks, but Istanbul Kebab is still open (as far as I know). A bit farther for me, but it's around exit 8. There's also a few guys who set up carts on the weekend, but it sucks if you want a cheap midweek lunch. |

Ditto.
Almost all the Korean customers go for the ice cream. Rarely ever see them getting kebabs. |

I was referring to the fleet of mobile trucks that flood the streets after dark. Shop guys are all pretty cool, and deliver 100X better product. I think the street jagoffs have turned people off to what can be an awesome meal. |

Another one bites the dust! Both the Kebab places in Ewha are closed now as well. The one right outside Ewha station was the best in Seoul, he made those Pide Kebabs so good. Holy shit that makes 4 since I've been gone. |
