Google "Korean National Foundation Day"

"National Foundation Day" sounds too stuffy for this fairly whimsical calendar event. Closer in spirit to its korean name, I think they should retranslate it as "Sky-Opening Day."

Far better than Hallowe'en. By the way Costco already has Christmas stuff put out and some for Oct. 31st though this country doesn't celebrate the latter.

Dont mind this person, they have a chip on their shoulder against anything USA related being in korea.
Actually with more and more koreans becoming christian and understanding it, christmas is celebrated by more koreans each year. My gf's family celebrates it (of course it relates more to Jesus than gift giving but it still counts lol)

Calenadar, you're being paranoid. You misunderstood. Halloween isn't a national holiday in North America, either. He wasn't asking for it to be a national holiday in Korea or America. You made such a comment because you can read English, but don't understand the culture. There is nothing wrong with Koreans celebrating Halloween to have extra fun, but no one was saying anything about having it as a national holiday. Halloween is actually slowly becoming popular. If you think about it, if Korea wants to be purely Korean, it should abandon Valentine's Day, it came from the West. White Day started in Japan. Anyway, don't worry, be happy.

As far as the Korean holiday Zack, it has to do with the foundation of Korea, and is associated with Tangeun/Dangeun who is supposed to be the father of all Koreans. There is also a story of a bear who ate garlic and mugwort because she was told to do that to become human. I believe Gancheon married the bear when she became human, and Dangeun came from that. It's the foundation of Korea in the same way Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus when a wolf raised the two boys before they established Rome. That's how I understand it.
