Can anyone suggest a good company for me to go with? Every recruiter suggests a different company to get a certificate with. Can anyone tell me one that actually helped them to be a better teacher? |

All of them seem to be the same. There are a few advertised on the front page of dave's, not saying those are legit, but they will give you a start. I checked a few websites, prices, and curriculum and decided to go with
http://www.tesolcourse.com/ . I opted for the tutor support, because I wanted to get the certification asap and did not want to take the long test at the end of the course. I would suggest against this method, because all you do is turn in worksheets and they get graded. After 20 worksheets you are done and get the certificate. I'm about half way through and I have learned a ton from this course. |

I think you can learn from any course but if you really want quality- make sure you look into the teacher trainer and their own experience, qualifications and dedication.
I took a look at the accreditation of this course - LOL! This is TEFL at its finest. I"m sure the two schools accredited by this agency OTTSA probably funded and backed up its creation. A real travesty and I stand by this. I've done a lot of research into accreditation of TEFL/TESOL courses and this is another one for the "pulling the wool over the eyes" pile.

Lots of opinions but the bottom line is - What do you want it for and will you (possibly) teach anywhere outside of Korea.
IF you plan to use Korea for a gap year (or two) AND you don't plan to go elsewhere then a TEFL/TESL/TESOL certificate is NOT needed to get a job nor is it a visa requirement.
Get the cheapest on-line course (100 hours or more) that you can find. 100 hours will get you the pay bump in a PS job and won't hurt in a hagwan.
IF there is a chance you want to work elsewhere then get a decent course (120 hours with a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum with real students). The TOP brand names would be SIT Tesol, Trinity or CELTA.
ALL THAT SAID, I am NOT a blanket endorser of TEFL/TESOL certifications BECAUSE most of them focus on teaching English to Adults and the vast majority of jobs in the Asian EFL market are teaching to KIDS. The pedagogy is significantly different and most of what you will learn in a TEFL course are useless when working with kids (try explaining the present perfect to a 4-year old).
IF you are doing the TEFL as a matter of professional development then get the best you can afford that has a focus on the age group you will be teaching.

Try to do some long term planning if you can. Find a company that does both TEFL and overseas master degrees thru an american or british university. Do your TEFL there with the possibility that you might want to get 9 credits for the TEFL towards 30 credits for a Masters. The TEFL will be guaranteed to have high standards also. |

I wanted to use this to get a job in South Korea. Teaching in Korea will be the gap year(s) between my Bachelors and my Masters.I know they say you don't need it, but i just wanted to be ahead. If i like teaching enough i just plan on getting my Master in Applied Linguistics .So i just want to get the most basic certificate. |

I've created a mini TEFL certificate course. 14 units of videos, readings and quizzes. Self paced and you'll get a certificate immediately.
Lots of extra resources and readings included, as well as community support. We have about 180 doing the course so far and 8 graduates after the first week. I think it is a good idea - part of the open course movement.

Demo the course before enrolling with id- demo pw - demo12
I'll continue to expand the course, stay tuned.
