|
|
So, I've convinced my boss to add the English Time series to our curriculum. Now, I'm working on a time table for it. How long does anyone else use each book? I was thinking 3 months for 1-4. So 4 units per month. That would be one class on Conversation Time, one on Word Time and Practice Time and another on Phonics Time. Classes are 55 minutes. Problem is what about number 5 and 6. How does anyone structure their classes for those? How many pages/which sections per class? Do you take 3, 4 months? Longer?
Thanks for any input. |

I'd say your about right. Each class is different but the 3-4 month window sits about right. Depends what your supplimenting with and the nature of the class. |

When i taught english time i went at a leisurely one page per class. I had class everyday. Get to do a lot of review and activities. Also the kids seemed to remember it better.
I had the freedom to do this because my boss never cared how I taught. |

I do English Time, too, and these Conversation Times and Phonics Times don't seem very important to me. Especially the Phonics Time. What do they need to know about short O's and short E's?
The best part of those books, and I think where you should spend most of your time, is on the functional language. You can do your class in three months just focussing on those parts. The "What's this, What's that, Is it a , How many, Is he, Are you" etc. Make sure they can ask and answer those questions.
Also, watch the tests and the spelling. My kids are nine years old. There are kids in Canada who are nine years old who can't spell "telephone" and "mail carrier." And I expect my kids to? Speaking is more important than spelling. |

Yeah English Time is pretty sparse so I found maybe just over one unit per week, we easily finished the books in two months. If you've got the workbook too maybe you could make it last a bit longer... |

This depends on your class of course but in general, I usually allot 4 months per book. It is not implausible to get through a book in 3 months but some kids may be left behind a bit. Anyways, I always tell my employers that they should expect 5 months per book. This way, if I want to add material and activities to the class and not worry about going over the scheduled finish date. It also makes them happy when you finish before that date. |

If you can, get your hands on the English Time teacher's manuals.
They are a gold mine of ideas and help. Filled with great lesson plans and additional material and tests.
Using the teacher's manuals you can easily stretch out the lessons to meet any schedule. |

I have the teacher's guides and the tapes, but not the flash cards/wall charts. Students come 5 days a week for 55 minutes. We usually do the textbook Mon, Tues, and Wednes, Thurs is usually a phonics book for most for leve dayls. Friday is test day, activity day or game day. I was thinking about 4 classes per unit. It's worked for level 3 and 4 so far, but is this too fast for level 5 and 6? |

English Time (and the easier series Magic Time) have great songs.
I usually play at least one of their songs each class. The melodies are great and the grammar is really repetitve and the songs are really catchy. I always walk round humming their songs to myself and driving myself nutty@@@@!! |
