Hola!

I am being asked to participate/host a golden bell event (a game show similar to jeopardy/etc) at my school (public school/Incheon district). This activity will require me to host and provide other assistance for two hours a week (for two weeks, thus four hours in total). Since I am already teaching 22 hours a week, I figured that this would be considered as an overtime, but my co-teacher is contending that it is not, since it's not 'teaching' in the strictest sense. I know that the previous schools I worked at would always pay extra for this sort of thing, but this school has a different point of view on this issue. Does anyone else have to participate in a similar event and how does the school management go about the overtime pay issue?

Thanks to those that read and respond to this query.
Cheers.

If it's between 8:40 and 4:40, on a weekday, then no, I wouldn't consider it over time. At a push, maybe it's non-instructional overtime, which would be 6000won per hour. But do you really want to risk getting a bad rep with your school over 24000 won over 2 weeks?

Just do it, it's not like you have to put effort into reading out some questions and clicking through a powerpoint.

Check your contract. Some will specify that "you may be asked to participate in extra events that will not count as overtime" or something like that.

Things used to be so good that any side "trips" were compensated by the MOE. This included visits for our orientation, a whopping 7,000W an hr just for showing up Shocked jk~ but they really didn't have to pay us because they also made these trips mandatory

Tighten up the budget, and things are open to 're-negotiation'. Small additions were added and no one really fought them since most were worried about losing their jobs.

Right. The question is, does this, or should this be considered as time spent teaching, thus overtime, or should this be seen as an extra activity with little relevance to teaching.

I must admit, our contracts are pretty liberal. We can, in fact, be asked to work 40 hour straight without any overtime pay, since many, if not most job tasks, can be considered as being non-teaching activities. This school plans to have 3 such events this year, so this is at least a 6 week ordeal for this year.

I agree... I did ask only because such activities were paid for in the past. I foresee many such extra activities being piled on every public school teacher from this moment on without any compensation - all due to the budget cuts.

Orientation session this year was ..... not great. The schedule was full for 12 hours a day, for 6 days straight. While every lecture was meant for newbies, experienced teachers were forced to attend them as well (I say forced because threats of being fired were often verbalized by the coordinator). Also, while previous orientation sessions would often begin after the commencement of one's contract, thus being paid, this time it was conducted prior to the contract start date, thus free.

You can view it as overtime if you get paid, if not view it as volunteer work.
