I laughed at this first, but now I'm slightly depressed. I always thought we'd get replaced by at least a well trained ape, but this is pretty bad. The only thing that comforts me is knowing that these machines will inevitably turn on their masters

Bah, we've got the students as a first line of defense. My boys will have that thing sparking and exploding within 10 minutes.

...the trouble is, it is NOT a robot teacher -- it is a remote-controlled video-chat display, with someone acting as the teacher on the other end. There is no robot taking a teacher's job -- there is an (I imagine) expensive piece of equipment and a cheaper teacher taking a teacher's job...but the actual use of EngKey will also require a human in the room to act as a disciplinarian, because there DOES need to be some kind of classroom supervision, and EngKey will be unable to provide that....

It is a toy, and an interesting idea, but it still has so many bugs in the system that the first adopters of the technology are going to lose a LOT of money...and losing money isn't what many schools in Korea are about....

Exactly. Children are just incapable of not breaking stuff.

And furthermore, how often does your computer go down in school? At least once a week for me. How often does my VR studio not work. How about almost every time I want to use it. My touch screen decides to only be a screen fairly often for whatever reason. Does anyone elses internet stop working for like 1 minute at random times? I'd love to see this during a remote teaching lesson....

My internet is always there. My computer never breaks down. All the equipment is fairly reliable. Maybe the problem isn't the computer but the person using it.

I feel honored to have had Creeper1 troll one of my posts.

I can confirm that this happens to my coteachers and homeroom teachers as well. In fact, we were just complaining about it together over coffee on Friday. Maybe it's not the equipment or the user...maybe it's the adminstrators? But I guess I'm just a dumb NET bum who has no idea how to use a computer right?

We have had the repair man out multiple times to replace faulty sound boards, motherboards in our touch screen, fix the VR camera, etc...

My classroom computer has a floppy disk drive. The machine is older than my students. It freezes up on a daily basis, at least. My kids already know that it's poop or garbage computer.

3.5". Still, that's not a new computer, and it ran like garbage when I first got there. I cleaned it up as best I could, but there's only so much you can do.

Well if you could only be more like Creeper1 who is God's gift to ESL and now appartently IT.

Plus he is/has:
1. Extensive experience
2. Innovative
3. Motivated
4. Results-oriented
5. Dynamic
6. Proven track record
7. Team player
8. Fast-paced
9. Problem solver

I saw a laptop with a floppy drive the other day. I couldn't believe it was only about 10 years ago that we stopped using them. It seems like so much longer. I used to love that the 5 1/4" were actually floppy. Anyone remember the old Apple II with cassette tapes?

And I wonder when they are going to change the "save" icon to something besides a floppy disk. Apple just changed their Itunes logo to get rid of the CD. Kids growing up now must wonder, "what is this picture of that means save?"

I work in a new school so all the equipment is relatively new. The robots will be new technology so you can bet they will be reliable.

ANother point I would make is that JR White and NYC Girl certainly have no problem with their internet judging by the posts they make on here seemingly everyday (or more like every hour)

The iphone4 was a new technology...didn't work quite so great when it first came out.

The Challenger was cutting edge....yeah...didn't work out so great.

Titanic - unsinkable......but didn't work out so great.

ANother point I'd like to make is that Creeper1 has a hard time reading. First, I said my internet goes down randomly for about a minute for no reason. This doesn't affect my ability to post every hour. (again, flattered that you follow all my posts) But it does get to be a pain when I try to use an interactive flash activity on the touch screen in the middle of class with 40 excited kids. And I'd love to see the remote teacher get cut off in every class in the middle of her lesson. Luckily, I'm smart enough to have backup plans in place for when this happens. I'd love to see a teacher who isn't even there implement a backup plan effectively. In the meanwhile the CT has to go back and reboot her connection (taking more time). Second, NYCGirl didn't say anything about her internet, she said her COMPUTER crashes quite often. Creeper1, as an expert in IT, I thought you would know that the internet and a computer are two different things. Here's a hint: The computer is the thing you use to access the interent. That might help clear it up for you.

Having an ipad and a laptop that I often bring in so that I can work on my lessons helps during office hours or breaks. My internet is great. It's the school-provided hardware that sucks.

My problem is with the main computer that's hooked up to the TV. It often craps out when I need to do something with the students. This is why I always have an analog option available at all times. I don't see how these remote teachers would be able to fix hardware issues. The IT guy at my school is decent, but this would become a hassle, would it not?

noone has mentioned about when the Phillipina teachers eventually dont receive their pay because its late/the korean way/someone is too busy drinking soju and then the thing is just useless.

this is all to save money and for some old guys, take a swipe at whiteyz boinking their daughters and they cant stop it. Teachers are needed and always will be because the root of human learning is human interaction.

you do what you do to get or change behavior in another person, right? so
