Some big fights to end the year.

46 year old Bernard Hopkins fights 29 year old Chad Dawson for the Light Heavyweight title this Saturday (US time). This is Bernard's first Title Defense since gaining the championship against Pascal (28) last May. I'm personally excited for this fight because I get excited for every Hopkins fight. The guy is an inspiration because he's beating up on guys almost 20 years his junior due to his unrelenting self discipline and work ethic. If 20 year-olds were as disciplined as Hopkins, they'd accomplish a lot more. His fighting style might be boring to some, but as a boxer, I always learn something from watching his fights. At 46, the last guy to beat him truly convincingly was Roy Jones Jr back in 1993.

Due to his technique, savy tactical approach, and perfect footwork, I'd say Hopkins wins this fight via Unanimous Decision. Dawson is also a southpaw but Hopkins is even better against lefties. The only Southpaw he's lost to is Calzaghe and the Welshman was the best supermiddle weight in the history of the weightclass. Even then the fight was extremely close.

Also next month, we have a huge match in Pacquiao vs Marquez on the 12th. I was initially vexed at Bob Arum for making this fight instead of doing everything in his power to get a fight with Mayweather but other than Mayweather, Marquez is the best challenge to Pacquiao. The previous two fights these guys had against eachother were a stunning display of technique and courage and one of the best displays of pugilism. It will no doubt be a good fight. I think people should also keep in mind the Mayweather vs Marquez fight when watching this because it'll be a good guage to size up Pac and Floyd against eachother should they ever fight. People seriously underestimated Marquez when he fought Mayweather (they mostly gave Floyd crap for KOing Marquez, which is nonsense) but you'll see how freaking good this guy is when he fights Pacquiao. He's one of the living Mexican legends of his generation along with Barrera and Morales. Still, I see a Pacquiao victory via decision.

Then, in December, there's another huge event when Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito face off again but this time at junior middleweight. Cotto's one of my favorite fighters and has a style I really like. No doubt this fight will be a battle but I am not sure who to really pick for this. At one hand, Cotto's last fight with Mayorga showed he makes mistakes that leaves him more vunerable than he should. He got hit a lot more than I think he should've against an opponent not on his level, and against a guy like Margarito, that could mean trouble. But Cotto was jabbing more, which is a good sign. On another hand, Margarito doesn't seem like the same figher after the plaster scandal and the defeat against Mosley. Let's see if he still has that same fire that made him so fun to watch.

Your picks and thoughts about the coming match ups? It's such a shame KBSN doesn't air live boxing fights anymore.
