I will be renting a car for one day/one night. Does anyone know the general rules about parking?

For example, if I park the car on the street next to my apartment, is there any rules about leaving it overnight?

Or could I get a permit for one night to park in my building's parking garage?

Also, anyone know of where I can park in Samcheongdong?

Park anywhere you want, just don't get caught and/or don't park in front of a business' door/entrance, especially restaurants/hofs/and the like during evening and night hours.

You should be OK, if it's just overnight...Anytime after 6pm until 9am the next morning, there GENERALLY are no ticketing agents around-- once the Gu/Dong offices open, that's when they'll come out...Do you notice other cars parked there, usually? Then you're ok...

If you're in a regular apt building with a guard/gate to enter the parking lot, then yes, you can get permission from the guard room (a paper you stick in front of the dash with your apt no., car's license plate no., your cell number and the date it's valid for...Just ask the 'kyongbushil adjossi/guy in charge of recycling, etc-- by far the safest/easiest option.

No idea.

Generally, if it's overnight, as long as you're not parked on a busy/major street, you're fine (like the tiny alleys off the major streets)-- Just be sure to move it before 9am. Look for other cars-- don't be the only one there and you'll be ok, even if it's 'technically' illegal. (like most other things around here...)

Thanks for the great reply thrylos. The only problem I can see is trying to have that conversation with our security guy in English (which they don't speak) or Korean (which I don't speak well). Might have to find a Korean friend to help me I guess.

To add to thrylos's post...

There are some places that are designated no parking zones which are monitored by camera! You'll see the signs up if its one of those camera monitored parking zones. Tried to find the sign in google but couldn't.

I say the above because , you ever notice random delivery cars/ trucks ( non official ones anyways ) park where they shouldn't be ( for however long the delivery might take) Usually they cover their license plate with a piece of cardboard/paper so cameras cant snap the license plate. Just look around for the camera parking sign just in case =p.

If its inside an apt complex with guards Just make sure to get a temp permit or else guards will tow it away ( I've seen it happen a few times where I live )...

Really? I always thought if you parked underground you were safe, it's the surface parking I thought were the issue. I always parked cars underground and had no issues.

Park outside the city and take public transportation in. It'll be faster and cheaper.

Maybe you have lazy security guards .. which is good!

THe guards in my apt complexe actually check each and everycar around 9-10pm Above ground and underground. Obviously, I very very very very very very rarely see a tow truck in the apt complex but I've seen a few cars towed in the last 6 months both underground and above ground. rare sight though..

point is, I wouldnt take the chance where I live =p.

A simple "chu-cha yeogi ne-il kajji" (park here until tomorrow) while pointing to the car should suffice to get the note.
