Hi everyone!!

I'm definitely not a morning person, but working from 2-10 pm seems insane to me. How would I be able to enjoy the city and not let work consume me?
That's why I'd really like a 9-5 job but it's been really hard to find one.

If you guys can share about your 2-10 or 3-10 or 1-9 job experiences, it will help a lot! I might have to compromise, that's why. Confused

One more question: how do you guys eat dinner????

I work 1:30-9:30 and its not that big a deal. I'm not huge on drinking during the week but on the occasion that you do its nice to be able to sleep till noon. Plus I have breaks during the evening so I always have time to go outside to grab dinner.

Plus everything out here is open super late, its not uncommon to see loads of locals outside drinking outside a mini-stop till 4AM.

Unless you go for a public school or a hagwon that caters to adults and businesspeople, you're going to find jobs in the 1-10 range.

We go in at 2, have lunch for an hour before classes begin at 5, then stay in the office until 10:15. Some duck out for a smoke break or to grab a can of soda from next door. Most of my coworkers wait until after work to eat dinner, some have a break during classes and run out for food or pack a dinner and eat.

You say you're not a morning person, and wonder how you can enjoy the city with those hours. What do you mean by 'enjoy the city'? Are you talking about the nightlife or other things to do? For me, I'm up at 7, do whatever I want in the area all morning, then go to work at 2. There's no conflict between the two. If you're concerned about drinking every night, 10 is still early enough that you can get your fill.

I don't drink at all, but I would like to get off work early so I can tour around, go hang out with my friends, visit my family, watch a movie maybe, eat dinner, maybe take some piano lessons (I heard it's cheap in Korea).. things like that. but yes, I guess if I woke up early, I'd be able to do those things in the morning if I really wanted to.. Thanks for your replies!

Keep it comingg please!~

Instead of looking at hours, look at days. Work a lot on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Then, you have Friday through Monday to negotiate a day off. 3 days is more than enough time for someone in Korea.

It kind of sucks sometimes knowing that you really can't do anything during the day. You might think that you can just wake up at 9 or 10 and do stuff, but in this city you need a lot more time than that to get around and take care of business. You also dread having to go to work later, and then you're always really tired at the end of the work day. You wake up at 12 instead, go to work at 2 and then when you get off everything is dead, closed and dark. It's kind of like being a vampire.

Eh? Which part of Korea do you work in that everything is dead and closed at that time?

I've known a fair number of people who have worked this schedule, and most seemed to fall into a zombie world of waking up at noon every day and going to bed at four or five in the morning. I think it tends to be a better schedule for light drinkers who can keep themselves busy during the day. If you do like to party it ends up being a bit too easy to get your drink on every night. Simultaneously, you have limited time after leaving work prior to public transportation largely shutting down, which kind of limits you to sticking around your home area except for Saturday and Sunday.

I would never work such a position, as I'm 90% sure I would fall into the aforementioned zombie mode, but it's great for some people (particularly those who want to take morning classes).

Yeah, that's the main problem why I don't want to work that kind of shift even though I don't drink.. it's been soo hard to find another time though.. I don't mind teaching Kindy but I heard that most of those positions are given to white people =[ and I'm Asian.. =/

Male or female? Asian male (non-Korean), I'd imagine it would be difficult. Asian female, on the other hand, might well trump a white male for a lot of schools. I know my school has had a hell of a time finding women to fill its positions, and kindies overwhelmingly prefer women.

I work a 2-8 (rarely 9) hagwon, and love the schedule. I have all morning to spend with my husband and dog. We leave for work at around the same time (he teaches uni so gets home much earlier) and I'm home in time for a light supper, a few hours to either watch a movie, read, or whatever, and am usually asleep by 1am.

I work a similar schedule as well and I also love my schedule. I work from 1:30-7:30 and on Fridays I'm fortunate enough to only have one class. I usually wake up around 9-9:30AM and I'm in bed by 1:30AM.

I usually either go out to eat with Korean friends after work or make something at my place.

I personally can't compare with others who work in a hagwon job because just about all of my buddies work at public schools so far out in the boonies it would make most first timers cry. However I would much rather sleep in if I need to once in a while (out late the night before or for whatever other reason) rather than waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning for that 8-4 or 9-5.

FEMALE. but every recruiter I've talked to told me the same thing. That finding a morning shift is hard. So far I've gotten about three job offers and they are all 2-10, so I had to decline. I'm thinking if I don't get one by next week, I might have to compromise.
1-7:30 shift sounds great to me too. As long as I can finish up by that time, it's good.. but I've never heard of that shift Shocked
