SEOUL, South Korea (AP) Samsung Electronics is asking Japanese and Australian courts to block sales of Apple's new iPhone 4S in those countries.
The preliminary injunctions Samsung filed Monday in Tokyo District Court and the Federal Court in Australia are part of an intensifying patent battle between the smartphone giants.
Samsung says Apple Inc. continues to violate its patent rights and "free ride on our technology."
Samsung is also appealing an Australian court's decision last week to temporarily ban sales of Samsung's new Galaxy tablet computer. Apple accused Samsung of copying the iPad and iPhone and violating Apple's patents.
Samsung says it's also asking a Japanese court to immediately bar sales of the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. |

I wonder why apple started this battle? Samsung has a huge war chest, and probably have no qualms moving money from one business unit to aid another. |

You sure about that? I'm talking the Samsung Group, not just Samsung Electronics. The Samsung Group has an excess of $300 billion in assets. More than 3x Apple's assets. And Samsung is essentially private, so money can be moved around between business lines easily at the CEO's whim.
If they wanted to bankrupt a company, Samsung is the wrong one. I'm baffled at Apple's reasoning for this. Let them compete, but I don't see Samsung gaining much of a foothold in the iPad segment. |

Personally I'm POed at this kind of garbage. Stop competing in the court room and start competing for my money with better gadgets. One wonders what percentage of the cost of a new iPad or whatever goes towards lawsuits. |
