Hi, I've just had SK internet installed at my apartment. It was sold to me as a 100mb connection (wired) that would drop to around 50mb wireless but it's nowhere near this, has anyone had a similar experience with them?

Maybe someone is stealing your bandwidth. Hell, I stole my neighbours wifi when I first arrived because I couldn't get my own connection until the end of the month.

Try turning your wifi off and connecting your PC/laptop directly to the router with a network cable.

I'm with KT. Just ran speedtest.net and got:

Ping - 36ms
D/L Speed - 17.08 Mbps
U/L Speed - 26.21 Mbps

Listed for comparison purposes. For me, seems plenty fast, especially compared to my old connection back in the US.

I got SK broadband installed about a year ago. At the time, the engineer used a local speed test site and tested the cabled connection at >90megs, although the best that speedtest.net would come up with via the Seoul server (and still does) is about 40 - 50. In that respect, I would grudgingly accept the 100meg claim as fairly accurate with the caveat that not all speed test sites are as generous as the one they prefer to use.

Wifi will cause this to drop yet further, i get around 15meg with wireless on speedtest. It might register more on local sites, not sure. If you call them out to check your speeds they will probably demonstrate the above, shrug, and leave you to it. Highly unlikely they will be able to boost the speeds, although you never know.

Thing is, that's for in-country speeds. When you test overseas it falls dramatically, typically less than 10megs to the western US and less than 2meg to the UK. So in terms of connection speed impact on daily usage for foreigners, it's not so much about the headline speeds, more about the practicalities / throttling involved in connecting overseas. Put another way, more is always better but you shouldn't see much / any practical difference when browsing / gaming / streaming via sites or servers abroad whether your connection tests at 100 or 30 megs here.

Overall I've been a lot happier with SK than my previous provider (C&M).

SK sucks to conections outside of Korea. They went to hell after the Japan Tsunami and now throttle bandwidth and have huge lag. Avoid. Go with KT.

I am not sure whether I should go with KT or SK. KT wants to charge me 41,000 won including taxes and including 8,000 for renting the modem.
That means 33,000 won. My co-workers say that's too much. What do you think?

Cable TV companies are cheapest (you can get Cable TV plus internet at that price) but speed can be spotty.

NOTHING has been worse than the current speeds I am getting with SK Telecom, however. YouTube is especially throttled. Had the tech out here and he claims nothing is wrong. I can use my Galaxy S1 phone as a wifi hotspot and get better speeds. Yes, it's that bad.

Over 400ms average lag to sites in the USA on this home connection.

My connection is fast enough for Youtube etc but I'm only getting around 11mbps wireless and 13mbps wired (speedtest.net). Considering I was told by SK it would be at least 50mbps I don't think this is acceptable.

The main reason I wanted such a fast connection is so that I can stream/download British TV through a VPN, I realise this slows things down quite a bit but I thought the connection speeds that SK told me I would get would more than cover it. Unfortunately I can't watch anything without it constantly buffering, despite trying 3 different VPN providers and numerous different UK servers.

I'm thinking of asking my co-teacher to give SK a call for me though I understand it's pretty likely they'll just send an engineer to tell me it's fine. I've had the connection less than a week so I assume I can just cancel it if I need to, but then is there any point if I can't get anything faster elsewhere?

What do people recommend that I do?

As others have mentioned, switching to KT is your best option. Where are you getting these numbers of 11mbps and 13 mbps? SK's speeds are fast within Korea. They can advertise 100mbit speeds to Koreans because that's what you'll get connecting to a Korean site, and most Koreans use most of their bandwidth at Korean websites. SK's connections to the rest of the world are horrendous. You're never going to get anything close to 100mbit speeds to Europe or North America. KT is marginally better, but still not great.

Thanks, I'm getting those speeds from Speedtest.net using the Seoul server, does that suggest that there is actually a problem with my speeds? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm not very technologically minded!

Also, can you give me an idea roughly how 'marginal' the improvement with KT is?

I'm with Qook (KT) and I get a 100mb connection. I highest I've seen was 11mb/s download using Steam. Using torrents I usually get around 7mb/s downloads (depending on the number of seeders). Seems like something is up with your wiring/local telecom cable condition.

I pay 52,000won a month (which includes renting the digital box for the TV). I don't care about the price though, that's the same price as my broadband was in the UK, yet here that also includes a TV package with about 200 channels, and in the UK my top download speed was 300kb/s, whereas in Korea I can download at 11mb/s (11,000kb/s), which a handy website tells me is a 3566% speed increase. I don't mind paying 30 pounds a month for that sort of connection!

My co-workers seem to be content with SK. They haven't complained much. Could it be fine in the Kwangju area? I don't have cable, but I have a TV. I am trying to figure out what's the best deal. Some people at work were saying paying 41,000 won including taxes for having the internet is a lot. Are you all really having serious problems with the internet? Where are you located?

I'm just outside of Busan, but I live in a brand new officetel, which has things like Samsung Life Insurance offices on the lower floors, so I'm guessing the building has top of the line telecoms cabling/fiber optic lines etc. Regarding whether lower speeds are acceptable...I guess it depends on how important download speeds are...for me it's important due to the amount of stuff I download (TV/games/music) etc.

Almost no Koreans (well, not counting students/pro-Starcraft players) play videogames at home on their PCs, or want to download 6/7 seasons of X or Y programme to watch when they get home from work, so ultra fast download speeds aren't important to them, so they won't be able to understand why anyone would pay more than 20/25k for internet (which I imagine is the cost for bog-standard Internet packages).

Also many Koreans have Galaxy Ss or similar phones and download shows/music straight onto their phones, so don't care about their home internet connections.
