And before those of you are thinking (E-2 Visas) I am not talking about that.
After leaving Itaewon this afternoon on the back street of 3 Alleys et al. I can see the amount of money that is being spent there. And then you walk down on the main street and again a lot of money has been spent there as well and will continue to be spent there.
The amount of money that goes through Itaewon is not predominated by foreigners but by Koreans. Go there on the weekend and if you think Itaewon is a place for Foreigners you are very mistaken.
If you go to any China Town in the world the majority of businesses are owned by foreign entities. But in Korea (Seoul) that is not the case. People come to places like Itaewon to envelop themselves in such an atmosphere. But it is taken over by those who don't like the notion that foreigners can'y offer something to Korean (and Koreans) that Koreans can.
The restaurants cater to Koreans and not to foreigners and they are predominantly owned by Koreans. Itaewon can be categorized as a "China Town" but Korea does not allow that.
They (meaning Korean investors) are waiting for the base to move down south and then make Itaewon a very upmarket place to shop and live. The location is ideal, but the current residence are not.
HBC is the same. Look what the Korean authorities did to minimize the impact of foreign involvement in this festival. It wasn't the noise. It was the case that OMG foreigners were investing and making a profit. Even though those foreigners making a profit were doing it legally and on the books, not like some Korean practices.
We have seen how Koreans treat Foreigners in the case of that naturalize lady in Busan at the Sauna. And Korea wants to be seen as internationalized.
In general, we are frowned upon, and looked down on if we endeavor to profit for the good of the community.
Can you envisage a HOF or what every in a community that is not designated for night life being told to shut down at midnight because of the noise? Well, that happen last week in HBC.
I won't call it racism but I will say that non-Koreans will continue to have up-hill battles while this mentality continues. |

The Soldiers moving can't come soon enough. Where are they moving to and when? Hope it's far. There's nothing worse than a early 20 something drunk, Jersey Shore type "teacher" here on a year long working vacation than an 18-19 year old boy who is full of testosterone and has a bad attitude. I wish they'd leave Korea all together. |

I think we get away with a lot. Korean society is much more harsh toward its own people who do thinks like this, or otherwise don't conform perfectly. |
