Hey all! I will have my MA degree in TESOL from the University of New South Wales in mid August. I have 2 years experience teaching English under the JET program in Japan. What would be my best bet for finding working in South Korea? I am flexible about location. However, I would prefer to find work teaching adults or teaching at a university. I am serious about teaching and making it a career, but I do need a solid and steady income to pay off my loans.

Thanks for advice in advance!

Start doing your homework on South Korean colleges and then send your resume and cover letter to the ones you would like to work for. With your experience and degree, you should be able to land a job at a university without a recruiter. This would save the new employer at least $1600 and would be an incentive to hiring you directly. If you have the funds, I'd even come here but it sounds like you are in debt. Tell everyone you want to stay in Korea for many years. Every new employer wants to hear that. Finally, practice your interviewing skills or memorize answers to questions you know they will ask you. Example, "What is your experience?"; "What can you do for us?" "What is your teaching philosophy?" Good luck...

I will have my diploma in hand around August 20th and it will probably take at least a week to get it apostilled (if that is what they want). Will this hinder me from getting a job in the summer? When does the hiring season start?

MA TESOL or not, it will be very, very hard to find a job at a university without being in Korea. Not anywhere but out in the sticks, anyway.

What about this:
Going to korea after I finish my degree and interviewing for jobs there? The kicker is, I will not have my diploma for my masters until mid August. I can get a letter from the head of my department saying I will graduate, but I will have no diploma. What do y'all think? Should I just navigate the hagwon maze instead?

You have the basic qualifications and some experience that can put you in consideration for University positions in Korea.

Hiring season starts in November so get all your documents in order and in hand (required docs for an E2) now. You will have to have your MA diploma in hand as that is better than a letter.

Inm mid to late October (so pretty soon), start looking for job ads. Note however that applying for a Korean University jon from OUTSIDE of Korea dramatically reduces your odds of getting a University job. You would do better flying to Korea and applying locally.

For Adult Hakwon positions, you can apply NOW, they hire year round.

It takes a while to get your paperwork together. I would work some kind of job at home in the meantime and work on getting your paperwork together starting in August after you have your diploma. Will you have your diploma? That's key. You could try some the Korean universities in the south like Chonnam and Chosun. Check on Dave's regularly.

Bachelor's degree and CBC require the apostille.

Your MA does NOT, at least not for visa purposes nor for the education office.

Most universities start recruiting in December for starts in March/April.

For the majority of university positions, if you have an MA they will accept the transcript for the application process but will usually ask for the originals of your undergrad degree, post grad credentials, transcripts and letters of reference (and list of publications if you have any) at the interview.

Unless you actually find a hagwan job that will end in late February the issues will be problematic or expensive.

IT is NOT a simple matter of just quitting and moving to the new job.

Hi ttompatz. I wanted to send this to you by PM, but don't have enough posts on this forum yet to have the ability. Here's someone who has seemed to have success without the need of a BA:

http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=92163&sid=fb18a385f35da95242799697552820f4

Sounds pretty legit. Just wanted to get your opinion, as you seem pretty knowledgeable on the subject (and it's somewhat related to this topic)

(Wait never mind the PM statement....I don't have enough posts on THIS board).

But they had a MA....

No BA at all and no other diploma (ex: MA) means no teaching visa.

That seems practical, but I was told - up until this point - that an undergraduate was required, despite the MA.

I have read it.
It is NEWS TO ME.
It is the first case (in over a decade) that I am aware of someone with an MA, without a BA, and able to get an E2.

It IS contrary to Kimmi policy and I would be very surprised if they allow him to renew, extend or change his status (change jobs) under the new rules (Dec2010 - enforcement start Jan2012 - unless of course he is married to a Korean).

I'm not saying that it can't happen (since it appears that in the past there have been more than 1 exception) but that it is highly irregular and I wouldn't count on YOUR being able to do it at some point in the future (rules are getting tighter, not looser).
