Hi guys!
I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have been working for this school for 4 months now and I have to return home due to some family issues. I am debating if I should give in my 2 months notice to the school or just do a run. I haven't had any problems with the school thus far, but am afraid that things might change once I decide to leave.
I had to pay 250 000won for 2 months as a "housing deposit for unpaid utilities etc" and I should get it after a one year contract. Also. it states that if I choose to break the contract, I will have to pay recruiting fees and reimburse them for the airfare to Korea.
Will I be able to get this housing deposit back even if I don't stay a year? How much is the recruiting fees? |

What you are asking is that although, according to you, your school has been honest and honored the contract, and you willingly signed the contract, and the contract has terms whereby you can end the contract with two months' notice, you might consider breaking the contract and becoming the dishonest party by running without notice in an attempt to defraud and damage the honest school.
Why do you have to ask?
Be honest, honor the contract and give proper notice.
Now, traditionally, you don't have to repay incoming airfare if you stay 6 months, which apparently you will do. What does your contract say? Although you will have to pay your own way home. So, this should be no problem.
What does your contract say about repaying recruiter's fees? This is a less common stipulation, but again you did agree to it. In any case, recruiters fees these days are normally 1,500,000 won. If you don't finish the contract it is not unreasonable to have you repay the fee - or maybe half if you worked 6 months. They will need to pay again to replace you.
Your housing deposits should all be repaid to you, if you leave no bills and cause no damage - again, depending on your contract terms. Although, going by what some have written on other threads, it seems that public schools keep the deposits when someone breaks the contract. Public schools overall are worse than hogwans on such terms in general. |
