I've applied for a job and I need to provide a certificate of employment (겅력증명서) for a GEPIK school I worked at 5 years ago. As it's been 5 years, none of the teachers from then will be there now, so I don't know how to get this. Any ideas? |

IF you are in Korea then just go to the admin office of the school and ask for it. Your file will be in there somewhere, they will dig it out, knock one off for you and get the stamp on it. It will probably cost you chun won.
If you are not in Korea then good luck. You may be able to get one through the policy division of the GPOE in Suwon-si, Jowon-dong if you were actually hired through GEPIK.

Do you think they will have my file after this length of time? I was doing some scouting around and I found this site but I'm not sure what it is.

Yes, they'll have it. They are required by law to provide you with the certificate, and you know how particular Koreans are about paperwork - trust me, they have your file. My old school, we'd box up midterm and finals answer sheets and store them, and they had these ancient boxes in the room with old records stretching back at least 15 years. They have your file. |

From the labor standards act:
Article 39 (Certificate of Employment)
(1) If a worker makes a request to issue a certificate specifying term of employment, job specification, title and wages or other necessary information even after the retirement of the worker, the employer shall immediately prepare and issue the factually correct certificate.
(2) The certificate referred to in paragraph (1) shall only contain the items that the worker concerned has requested.

First let me say I appreciate very much the contributions of ttompatz.
In my own case, around the time I was preparing to re-sign (for another year) at the same public school, it looked like I was being asked to provide proof of employment to the provincial office of education.
So I made the request to the administrative office--but the communication was uncertain. Eventually, I did not get the proof of employment, but after some phone calls, the Korean staff decided I did not need one for the re-signing (they were correct).
Still, it is likely that there is no teeth in printing out the English translation of Article 39 of the labor standards act and handing the English text to your school's administrative secretary. They can't read it.
What would be more helpful is a link to the Korean version, on-line, of the labor standards act (if such exists), so you can pull it up on the screen and have someone at your school read it.
I anticipate a day when I need to try again to get a certificate of employment, but I'm not very optimistic that I will get it if all I have is the English version of Article 39. |

If you can read Korean (or have a friend who can) you can download them yourself: http://www.moel.go.kr/
You know the number so just print it off and show it to them.
or you can get a hard copy from your local labor office.
