When I first got here a year a go, the business English rate was 50,000 an hour and 35,000 was for kindergarten crap. Now the going rate I see for business english is 35,000 an hour and seldom anymore. Also, I've seen 25,000 an hour for teaching afternoon kindergarten. How far do you think this will go? |

As far as i'm concerned.. the original rates you mentioned are still valid. I don't go for less.

My most recent gig pays 30,000 an hour.
I've got no problems though. It's only conversation practice and I'm not out to bleed anyone dry. Still better than anything I'd get in Canada. |

Recruiters is the answer. They have moved in and scooped up most corp classes. They keep dropping the pay offered and keep finding people who will take it. They don't care if the teacher knows what they're doing. If the company complains they just send in a different guy. The company never changes recruiter (its a korean thing) so the recruiter doesn't care. The company doesn't know your pay. They are still paying 60-75 thousand an hour like they did 2 years ago. Recruiters are getting fat on stupid or inexperienced teachers.

On the English Spectrum site many people are offering private tutoring for 25,000 - 35,000 won. I didn't go through a recruiter and they offered me 30,000. Since most other teachers are asking that much, I took it.
I think the above poster had a good point... the economy is kinda bad right now. Unless you're tutoring some execs from Samsung, you shouldn't be too greedy.
And death to all recruiters. They're all vultures. |

The economy has been pretty bad and it's not looking pretty too soon. Since China is starting to make a big market I think there will be less teachers coming to Korea, at that point the $$ may go up. There are also many parents that got burnt by bad teachers who really didn't do crap with their children and that kills it for the rest of the people too. |
