I am slowly coming to the realization that finding a job in Seoul is going to be an uphill battle with out an education degree.
I was wondering if getting a cheap online 100 hour tefl cert could help me stick out more in the job pool. My thinking is that so many people probably have tefl certificates that when a school is considering hiring a non education major the first thing they would do is throw out all the aplicants without a tefl cert.
Any other ideas for what I could do to make myself a more attractive applicant would also be welcome!
If it matters, this is the tefl course im considering: http://icalweb.com/cms/index.php |

Not if you're male and over 26.
I'm male, in my 30's, have over 5 yrs exp and tefl cert 100hrs and 20 units.
Haven't had an interview for Seoul in years, they just don't happen anymore. The two I did have recently were for a kindy mill with awful reviews on the net from past employees and one with a shockingly tough schedule. |

Getting any kind of certificate related to TESL is never a bad idea if you plan to stick with teaching for more than a year or two. It will get you slightly more money in certain situations, but since you have already stated that you are thinking of this as leverage and not a learning opportunity, you shouldn't bother. It is weak leverage these days. Graduate diplomas have been surfacing lately, but I personally think this is a waste.
Anyone over 30 who has been here for a while and plans to stay for a few more years is insane for not doing an MA. 23 and blonde? Can't hurt, I suppose. |

Agreed, Matesol, Ma Elt etc and get a uni / int school job is the way of the smart over 30 teacher. Get a good uni job and the money you make doubling your salary with camps or privates over your 3 monthsummer vacation will pay for your MA. better start soon though as most distance learning MA's take 2 years.
23 and blonde? You should be a shoe in. Added bonus points for being (in kind-of order of importance)
1. N.American
2. Tall
3. Handsome
4. Have big eyes
5. Zany / funny looking (but in a business / casual suit)
6. Professional studio photo of you in shirt and blazer is v important these days
7. Bs-up your resume and cover letter full of buzz words such as 'energetic' ' outgoing' and 'excited to learn and discover all the wonderful experiences Korea's deep and diverse culture can offer me!'
good luck |
