Hey guys, me and a friend are planning a trip to Laos and Cambodia over the winter break. We'll be going for 10-12 days probably. We're hoping to hit a couple places with a really laid back vibe, and would like to avoid big cities. Something maybe with a Boracay type vibe, lots of tourists but relaxed and not too seedy.

We'll probably just end up going to one or two places in each country, as we don't want to waste too much of the trip traveling. Just looking to relax in a few scenic areas and bum around.

Appreciate any recommendations!

I really enjoyed Vieng Vang in Laos, and from the description of what you're looking for it would suit you. It's a tiny place, mostly there for tourists but it's really laid back. What you do there is tube down a river among the amazing scenery while drinking at your own pace (among other recreational past times if you so choose). There's tons of open air restaurants to veg and watch Friends (or Simpsons or whatever) all evening if you want. I guess there's also parties going on along the river if you feel like that sort of thing. You'd have to start in Luang Prabang in the north (laid back as well, more temples and sights though), then take a bus down to VV, then continue to Vientienne to fly out (meh). I think Air Asia flies to these places, and the buses are cheap.

I also really enjoyed Cambodia. Of course you can't miss Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, and I actually liked Phenom Phen, but you can skip it and go straight to Laos from SR. I would suggest 3 days in SR, 1 day to fly to LP (3-4 days), 1 day to get to VV (3-4 days), then a day to get to Vientienne and fly out. I know travelling on such a short trip sucks, but I found the bus through Laos fascinating. It's a beautiful country.

Anyway, hope this helps. It's not a beach get-away but these countires don't really have beaches. I actually preferred the mountains and rivers of Laos to a crowded salt water beach anyway. Have fun.
