Hi, I'll be graduating with my bachelors in April and was wondering about a few things. First, how likely is it to find a job in may/june? I know I won't find a job in a public at that time, but do hagwons still hire a bit around that time?
Second, I've been hearing about a lot of changes going on in Korea in regards to the schools, mainly not hiring as much. I was looking at applying in EPIK but heard they're not hiring lvl 3s now. In terms of qualifications, I just have a bachelors in psychology, and a semester worth of volunteer tutoring. I don't have a problem with starting in a hagwon.
Finally, most of the teachers I hear stories from teach kindy or elementary kids. I tutor elementary kids, so it's not like I can't handle them, but I think I'd be more suited to older students. How common are jobs in middle/high schools? |

Public School jobs are available ALL YEAR ROUND. Just look on the Korean jobs page on this site for places. |

Why don't you make yourself more qualified? You can get a TESOL certificate or get more experience while you're at home.
You can look for a good hagwon job if you do a lot of research. Find a school, get interviewed, do your research and call up someone that works there. There are public school jobs that start at a different date from hiring season. You do the same research.
There are plenty of jobs where you can teach older students. I know someone that works at an adult hagwon but the split shift hours are insane. Again you'll have to look around diligently. At least for Seoul public schools, though, there will be no more high school teachers (like me) with few exceptions starting March. |

I don't think that a TESOL certificate is going to help much in the current market. |

As long as the number of applications from economic refugees from the States remains at their current levels there will be competition for PS jobs and for the first time ever they can afford to be picky about who they hire.
Your chances of actually landing a job in a MS/HS are pretty slim, especially in May/June, with only bare minimum qualifications for an E2.
There will always be job openings for "new blood" in kindy/elementary hagwans. These outnumber jobs with the "older kids/adults" (g7-12/uni-adults) by about 10-1.
So, bottom line:
If you want to work, there will be work to be had (provided you have your documents in hand when you start the application process).
Your chances of getting a "plum" job, fresh off the plane, are not very good.
You're gonna have to jump in, pay your dues (just like everyone else) and get some experience to enable you to move up.

I figured I'd have to start in an elementary school with the minimum qualifications I have, was mostly wondering if the middle/high school jobs even existed. As for TESOL cert, I heard it's not worth bothering with an online one and I won't have the money anytime in the near future for an in class certificate.
I'll look for a job at a younger hagwon and work from there. Thanks for the advice. |

I got my current high school job in June. While most P.S. hire at only two times during the year, many don't either have a teacher, get a teacher later or have a teacher leave early for whatever reason.
And yes hakwons hire year around. |

Your chances depend on your racial group, sex and looks. IMHO experience is less of a concern especially with hagwons. |
