Just wondering if your students use or even have dictionaries?

Mine don't. I find it astounding that students who are learning a language don't own a dictionary. When I was in school, we had a dictionary for both languages that we learning. It seems insane to attempt to learn a language but to not have a dictionary at hand.

Even my 10 year old students that I was teaching back home last year before I came out here used dictionaries. How else can students learn their spelling and vocabulary? Looking up spelling and meanings of words enforces the learning in a big way.

Also, the class I just taught. 13 showed up late and 10 with no notebook or pen.

I'm in a disadvantaged area so a certain amount of such goings-on are to be expected but what amazes me is that there is no culture amongst Korean teachers to ensure the students do the basics. They seem to just let them away with everything. i.e. coming late, not working, letting them sleep (not in my class, I wouldn't allow it) etc..

Is it the same in your school?

Well, if they have a cell phone, it probably has a built in dictionary, or else they use it to access an online dictionary.

The notebook and pen thing...that is just laziness and sloppy study habits, brought on through experience -- they do not being notebooks or pens to English classes because they have never been required to bring them to English classes -- just something else you need to teach them. They'll pick it up, eventually -- so long as you keep teachin' 'em....

All of my students have either a dictionary on their phone or one of those electronic dictionary things. No, I've never seen a paper dictionary since coming here.

After months of seeing (or I guess not seeing) Gadfly's avatar, I finally read the caption.. Hilarious.
