I don't know if I should be posting this because lots of people are telling me not to worry about it but here it goes. So I'm ready to face the criticism and what not but I really want to know the truth. So here it goes.
I worked in Korea for 2 and a half years with a hakwon 2008-2010. Things started off good but my final 6 months of my last year there I was not getting paid on time and my pay was becoming less and less.
Some bad ends on my part is that I was being immature back then, did have a few drunken disturbances in Korea. One like kicking a guy's car (yeah I know classy). Long story short of all of this is I was never put in cuffs, never spent a night in jail, never charged, nor did I ever have to go to court. I was fingerprinted and I did sign off on some paper work that stated I was sorry.
My conservative former hakwon director who I thought I left on good terms doesn't want to give me a reference because of my incidences. She said I was a good teacher just a little bit of a party animal.
So my questions are....
What am I to do about not getting a reference
and will these blemishes keep me from getting a new E-2 visa
P.S. I'm willing to go the hakwon route again but really I'm trying to get into public. So let me know. Also I prefer to hear from people who have had my experience or those who know someone who have had my experience and are back in Korea with new visas.
And if anyone is wondering I don't drink anymore so I can say I've grown the f' up. |

You don't need a "refenece letter" like we are used to in the west.
You want a certificate of employment (proof that you worked as a teacher).
She is required by law to give it to you
From the labor standards act:
http://www.moel.go.kr/english/topic/laborlaw_view.jsp?idx=254&tab=Standards
Article 39 (Certificate of Employment)
(1) If a worker makes a request to issue a certificate specifying term of employment, job specification, title and wages or other necessary formation even after the retirement of the worker, the employer shall immediately prepare and issue the factually correct certificate.
(2) The certificate referred to in paragraph (1) shall only contain the items that the worker concerned has requested.

Some places will ask for a Korean record. So your best move is get one. Check you local Korean consulate on how to get on. Hopefully you have no record.
More then likely then Public school job will ask for a in Korea check. Hagwon with immigration will likely not ask/care much. |

Umm you think they still ask for one even though I submit a nationwide CRC from my home country. |

Kimmi automatically checks the Korean CBC (they are part of the DOJ) before the visa confirmation number/NOA is approved. You don't need to do anything about it.
As to correcting the dates, try again with her or just go with what you have. You have 2 years showing on the certificate so the difference of a couple of months won't make any difference.

So do you think my past indisgression will show up on the Korean CBC? Will I be prevented from getting a new E-2 visa? |

Just had a lawyer in Daegu that commented that a employer does not have to provide a Certificate of employment after 3 years. What is your opinion ttompatz? |

re-read sub (1) of article 39.
They are legally required to do so. Getting it enforced is another matter unless you plan to take it up with a labor board complaint.
