I'm in the process of applying for a job, and i have been asked to supply two letter of recommendations. I can't really ask my current school because if I am successful, I would have to break the contract. What are the usual requirements for this? |

Your former employer is required by law (labor standards act, article 39) to issue a certificate of employment for the period of employment from start to current date/end of employment.
http://www.moel.go.kr/english/topic/laborlaw_view.jsp?idx=254&tab=Standards
Article 39 (Certificate of Employment)
(1) If a worker makes a request to issue a certificate specifying term of employment, job specification, title and wages or other necessary information even after the retirement of the worker, the employer shall immediately prepare and issue the factually correct certificate.
(2) The certificate referred to in paragraph (1) shall only contain the items that the worker concerned has requested.
Go back and ask for it. You need it for taxes or a credit card application for back home.

That is useful to know, thanks. But I thought a letter of recommendation is more akin to a reference vouching for your employability and character. I can't really ask my current school, so what you advise? |

Do you have a co-worker that you trust?

Hmm, not sure. I've never been in a position to have to rely on trust. I guess this would be a good test of that, but it could make my life difficult. |

Ask a student. Write up a letter, print it out and get them to sign it. Also give them soju if they're adults otherwise candy or chocopie would suffice. |

Haha, I assume you're kidding. I guess I'll have to ask my co-teacher for one letter and hope she doesn't say anything. Who else could I ask? I was thinking about my former co-teacher at my last school, but I'm not sure what is the accepted practice for these letters. |

Whistleblower is not kidding.
I wrote both of my letters of reference myself and just had my supervisors sign them. They also had to be "sealed and stamped" so I found some stamps and did that myself too. I'm surprised they still have that requirement since it's a bit of a joke imo. I worked for a restaurant and a video store, they don't have official stamps and they aren't normally expected to write Letters of Recommendation either. |

That is awesome. I might get my wife to write them in Korean and just have them signed by someone else. |

I asked my co-teacher at my last school to write a LOR, but she said the principal wasn't willing to use the school stamp for some reason. Will that be a problem? |
