I taught in Korea last year for around 6 months (I left early with two months notice)
Anyway- I've decided to do a masters in korea in geosciences.
Ive already contacted the university. I should be starting in September
Ive been applying for Winter Camp Jobs- my plan is (if i get one) to teach a winter camp for a month on a C4 visa then hopefully spend a month learning korean intensively (My masters is 100% English but my girlfriend is Korean and I'm frankly ashamed at my piss poor korean) and then go home (and keep practising korean) until September
I was wondering though- If it would be possible to convince a school to employ me on a 12 month E2 visa in the knowledge that I'd only be working for 7-8 months. In exchange they'd get a teacher for this time with no air fare or severance to pay. The only costs for hiring me would be whatever the document processing charge is and (depending on my negotiation skills) a ferry trip to Japan.
Also if i don't get a Winter Camp Job- Is there any reason I cant turn up in korea and search for a job while I'm there- theres plenty of places for me to stay while im searching and other reasons to be there
I know (I think) that I cant convert a C4 into an E2 so I need to bring a second set of Documents (or figure out how to get the first ones back)
And I'm only going on what other people have told me thinking that I can apply for an E2 visa inside Korea
Also I'd need to find out if having an outstanding E2 visa would mess up my application for a D4 (student)
There it is-sorry for rambling |

Can you spell out the time periods?
You want to do winter camp 2010-2011 or 2011-2012? Please note the month with year TOGETHER. As it is now, you need to do something for November and at least a part of December. I never had winter camps in December. They were always in January-February.

The school won't pay for those costs.

You can, but first time E2 teachers need to do an interview. Usually this is in their home country. It takes I think about 12 weeks to get your documents.
Some teachers have been able to go to places like Hong Kong I think to get the interview done. Talk with recruiters, they are the horse's mouth, not us. |

This is fairly common for people who are agreeing to renew a contract -- that is, someone has already worked a year, and is asked to stay on a second year, but the person intends to leave 4, 6, or 8 months into that new year. Both parties are aware and understand the actual, true end date, but still make a one-year contract. I've seen that many times, and am doing it myself right now.
As for the intial contract being made under those conditions -- I don't see it, as the school has no reason to want to take you over someone else that would agree to the full year, or possibly more -- unless you happen to find a school with a projected 8-month teacher shortage, I would think they would want someone for the full year and then some....
Good luck finding it -- it is not out of the question, but I don't think it very likely for a new contract. As I said, under renewal conditions, I would say it would be pretty easy to arrange.... |
