Not a good way to deal with it. People are people and all over the world they will stare at something that is different. It is normal, not a big deal unless you make it one. |

Again, another insightful perspective from Calendar? You have obviously have never been taught by your mom that it is rude to stare?
And I know it was a long article but the responses were of people finding it quite humorous.
The inventor of this comical concept, as well as many of us that have lived in a number of different Asian countries that a glance and a continual stare are two different things.
People stare at a zoo. Is calendar saying that if you are different to the norm that you belong in the zoo?
If a man stares at a girl for an extended time is considered appropriate then staring at someone who looks different is appropriate then. When that is considered acceptable then Calendar's position is justified. |

If it's particularly bad I just ask what they're looking at (in Korean). They're usually shocked enough that I can express myself in Korean that they jump and look the other way. |

Same. I usually ask if they know me (in Korean). The reaction is always the same, a look of shock and nervous laughter. |

I don't care if people stare at me. I stare at hot chicks all the time.
Seriously, if no one stared at you we'd get these angst filled threads about how someone feels all "alone" or like they don't exist...
And while this completely contradicts my statement above. "I don't look, I am looked at." |

Discreetly.
That's the key.
If I happen to stare at someone and if they notice me staring I will do 1 of 2 things:
1. Smile
2. Look away
The problem is too many people just KEEP staring.
I have been stared at many times. Since so many just keep staring I wave to them and smile. If they still stare after that then I say either:
1. If you look that much just take a picture....(while pretending to take a picture of them).
2. It's not a dream. It's real! |

Staring at people is considered rude by Koreans, so anyone staring at you is acting rudely.......there's no cultural relativism excuse in this case.
If I stared at a non-white while growing up in Ireland people would have considered me a boorish country oaf.......and Ireland was a lot more homogeneous when I lived there than Korea is now....so a non-white person was a very rare sight. But still, I knew not to stare because my parents taught me that. |

I'm not bothered at all by the staring these days. But then again, I am a rather handsome devil who looks like Brad Pitt, Matt Damon or Tom Cruise. |

Interesting way to deal with it. I wonder if its in Korean. |
meh. that's going to a lot of effort to make someone else feel uncomfortable. granted, it IS rude to stare, but this isn't my country. does this dude think he's going to make the entire nation of japan stop staring at westerners, simply with this little trick?
i don't know, it just seems a little unnecessary. if i start feeling weirded out by someone staring at me here in korea, i'll stare at them for a bit until it's obvious they won't look away - then i'll point and whisper, "hangook saram" in astonishment.
then we'll both have a little laugh, and continue on with our lives.
is that over the top? maybe. but i'm not going to be a douchebag and make a fake cover for a book. |

Staring is something that Koreans actually do a lot to other Koreans who stick out. Like attractive women, and disabled people get stared at all the time. Older people are more likely to ignore basic boundaries and just stare away at a disabled person limping in a subway. Also with goodlooking women, I can understand dudes getting a glance or maybe doing some looking without making it look obvious and creepy, but older Korean dudes just straight up stare even if the girl is visibly uncomfortable, her boyfriend is present, and all around looking like a creep. I notice it a lot when I'm with my girlfriend. I can't imagine what it'll be like for a goodlooking white woman. |
