If youre a publisher and you want to buy the book based on these passages, send me a cheque for $10,000,000 and well talk. |

The guy who wrote this book didn't have the greatest experience in Korea. He had a blog post titled "So Youre Thinking About Moving To Korea" that pretty much tore the country apart and talked about how much he disliked Korea after living here for many years (never understood why anybody would live in a place for an extended period that they disliked so much.)
"So Youre Thinking About Moving To Korea | David S. Wills"

However, he's taken the blog down for obvious reasons as it caused a bit of controversy and I think he even got some threatening comments (to his delight it seemed). Anyway, I would read the book knowing that it is from the viewpoint of someone who wasn't too happy living here. This is not necessarily a bad thing depending on the viewpoint you are looking for...just something to keep in mind. |

FWIW, I'm not sure how much of his blog was fact. He seems to blend the line between fact and fiction fairly easily, so it wouldn't be surprising if a lot of the stuff he had up there was actually exaggeration or just plain fiction. |

I do not know anything about the book, but it seems like people are afraid of writing books critical of Korea because people don't want to talk about their bad experiences in a country. Many foreigners do have bad experiencs and to a large extent it's because the Korean government it is too lax about enforcing its laws to where it's still common enough for hagwon owners not to pay the pension and health insurance and make crazy deductions. It also happened to a friend of mine recently who worked at a public school.
There was some building built, and the boss wanted the foreign teacher billed 1 million won for electricity charges. Obviously, the foreign teacher couldn't incur those sort of charges. The foreigners fought it somewhat, and then the Korean teachers were "encouraged" to pitch in and help the foreigner and pass the hat around and paid 600,000 won of their own money. Plenty of people could write about bad experiences here including Koreans just as plenty could write about bad experiences. I am sure plenty of Koreans complain about corruption, too.
I can't comment on the book, but many books could be written slamming the country because of the level of corruption in Namhan. It can be like paradise for many and hell for many others. |

Ah thought it was self published after reading the first two pages, but it's been published by 'beatdom' books.'
I didn't leave an amazon review (haven't read the whole book) but it just reads like a diary; karouac / beat writer without karouac's amazing imagery or pacing etc.
The bad writing hits you as soon as the second sentence
'Twisted little foul rollups'
Bejus.
So many people need to realise a yr in korea really isn't that exciting, it's not the 1950's anymore, everyone has had an adventure abroad these days and that nobody wants to pay to read your diary. Even Jack and Hunter bulled up their experiences. |
