There's a boxing event this weekend with the Main Event pitting Kim Dong-Hyuk (5-1) against Champion Ronald Pontillas of the Philippines (13-3-3) for the OPBF Super Featherweight (Junior Lightweight) title.
This Dong-Hyuk Kim guy is supposed to be the future of Korean boxing so it will be interesting how this will turn out. Unlike in the US, Korea tends to toss its up and coming prospects to the lions from the get-go instead of building them up with weaker opponents. Kim's only loss in his short record came from his fourth fight against Kim Ji-Hoon, who at the time had 21 fights and had experience fighting in a world title match. I haven't watched the fight, but losing by decision against a guy with so much more experience yet having only 3 fights yourself tells me something. Also, let's not forget that before Ji-Hoon's loss to Vasquez for the IBF title, he was steamrolling through competition in the US and had 11 consecutive knockouts. Despite being green, Dong-Hyuk ain't nothing to scoff at.
The event will be held in 경주 so I have no idea how to get to the fight or where to buy tickets so don't ask me. But MBC Sports will air it live starting from 12pm on Sunday. A fighter from my gym will be fighting in the card so I will definitely be tuning in. If yall like boxing it'll be something to watch this weekend.

Yeah, if he wins I can tell people I sparred that guy and landed some good shots. Of course he kicked my ass the rest of the session. I think he'll win though. Guy was a phenom in the amateurs. |

To those who care, Kim Dong-Hyuk won by a split technical decision. The doctor stopped the fight after the 6th round because of a cut above Kim's eye from an accidental clash of heads. The fight itself was pretty even and exciting with both guys throwing hard shots. This was Kim's 6th fight while it was Pontilla's 20th. Refine him a bit and after a dozen or so fights, he should be a potential world champion.
My fellow gym member(#1 ranked Junior Welterweight in Korea) knocked out his opponent(#2 ranked) in the 2nd round. |

| I hope to see Kim Ji-hoon fight more. He had quite a few KOs in the early rounds and I didn't get to see his title shot but he is a fun fighter to see given his penchant for going for the KO. |

He's fighting this month against a Yakubu Amidu (Ghanan guy) in an American event. Honestly, I like the guy but I don't see him going very far with his current skill level. He's still young enough to refine his game but as of now, I think he's too limited in what he can do. I caught his title fight live and Vasquez took him to boxing school. I think Kim needs a trainer who can give him a more technical approach. If he can go inside like Ji Injin, he'll wreck dudes.

I'm now terrified to spar him. Word is that his next fight will be be for the Korean title. It won't be long before he fights internationally I bet. |

Yeah, I can see that Kim Ji-hoon won't go far without the proper trainer. Guys who go for the KO can get frustrated by technician fighters and lose the big fights against quality opponents.
Still, Kim is probably one of the more exciting and better fighters from Korea in a long while. |

What's really interesting about Korean boxers is that they fight like Mexicans. Most Korean boxers are tough guys who go forward, throw hard shots all the while eating shots like candy. Just like Mexicans. If you're really interested in the one of best Korean in recent times, check out Morales vs Ji(or Chi). Ji is who Kim Jihoon should model himself after in my opinion.
I really do hope he wins this next fight. His right hand is like a freaking bomb. He just needs enough footwork and a good jab to find his mark.
You should also watch out for this Donghyuk guy. Like I've said, he went to a decision against Jihoon in his 4th fight. Means he's tough and has some defense. He also has an exciting style, although I didn't like how much he was getting hit. Potential World Champion. |
