Like many others, I have to get a CRC asap, but the RCMP CRC looks like it will take at least 4-5 months. I read that a check can be done through the VPD so I went on their site. However, I am confused about one thing.
"Documents from the government or an organization that clearly explains whether you require:
a fingerprint search through RCMP in Ottawa (if so, see Fingerprinting Service). If you are out of country you would submit your fingerprints, or
a name search of the National Repository and local criminal record check conducted by the local police agency where you previously resided (i.e. Vancouver)"
Which one do I need, the name search or the fingerprint search by the RCMP? Has anyone else used the VPD search? |

Immigration told me I need the RCMP one, period. It also needs to be certified by a Korean consulate in Canada.
I called the consulate in my hometown and they said the local police check is fine, because it's a national RCMP database anyway. But they said that if it is not certified by them (the Korean consulate), it will probably not be accepted by immigration.
The local search is much faster, but costs more. You don't need fingerprints, but will need to send in two scanned copies of ID by email, and I think 75$ CAD. Then you need someone in Canada to take it to the consulate, where they will need a letter from you saying someone else is picking it up (and who they are, etc), and a photocopy of your passport.
The RCMP check takes about 4 months and costs 30$ CAD, and you need to get fingerprints done for it if you are abroad. |

To which Korean consulate in Canada are you referring? I'd like to know if there's a specific one which accepts local checks. I am teaching in Thailand right now and want to get back into Korea for the March semester.
Was it Ottawa or Toronto? Please tell me it was one of the Ontario ones. |

| It was Montreal, but apparently the Vancouver one says the same on their website. Call and check. If one does, I bet they all do. |
