Was in this restuarant\bar out in the boonies of Kangwando a few months back and they were playing old LPs of Korean music from the 1960s. (on a LP player that looked older than me.)
Really cool sounding, mellow music.
I have been looking around ever since for some CDs of 1960s Korean music with no luck.
Does anyone know were in Korea, preferable the Incheon\Seoul area I could find some? |

In Hongdae, there is a bar called copjangjenonggol (written in Hangeul) that only plays this music, all on vinyl. I, too, was blown away by how good it is. The bar owner is really friendly but doesn't speak much English. If your Korean is passable, though, I'm sure he could give you suggestions. To get to the bar, you walk up the main street going up to the university (Hongik), away from the subway station. But halfway up, on the right, you will notice some side streets. Take the (I think) second one. You will know you're on the right one if you see a big pharmacy on the right. Once you're on the right street, take the first right after that. The bar is on the left, a small place.
Also in the area, with the same directions, but taking the first sidestreet on the right is a record shop right on the left ( I can't remember the name, but I think it has a yellow front, or is near a building with a yellow front) and they have all kinds of strange stuff including old Korean rock.
I really recommend, if you can find it, Chang Hyun or Shin Jun Hyung - great stuff.
If you just can't find it, pm me and maybe I can burn a disc or two for you. My husband is a Korean musician and he has a lot of good stuff. |
