There was a number of threads on here last winter about teachers being shocked by the price of heating gas. I remember quite a few people being gobsmacked by the price of heating their homes.
Be prepared now for it to happen again.
If you are in the middle of negotiating or close to signing a new contract. It might be in your best interest for you to ask about utilities and heat for the place you will be staying in.
Some teachers were running well over the 1,000,000W mark when they totaled their bills for December, January and February.

Maybe it's the people from warmer climates that complain about the cost of heating. I'm a pretty cheap guy, if i am cold I throw on a sweater or my snuggie, because that's how I roll. At night you don't really need to heat your home because you are sleeping, if you get that cold date someone under the pretense of having a snuggle buddy for bed time.... |

Good post Grass, even if I don't agree with one of your minor premises.
It's the Canadians that can't take the Korean cold. It's them that go into a total funk without full-on and dramatic intervention from the old 'ondol'.
For some perverse reason I have always understood their paradoxical fear of the cold. It's familiarity with cold mixed with newfound EFL Korean hardships.
All you need do is dress warmly for bed, as Grasshopper so eloquently makes mention. |

It's near the end of November, i have not used my onol floor heating yet. My room is cold so i wear layers to keep warm. I'll only use heating when it gets real cold. I've always been like that, nothing to do with money. More to do with saving energy/environment. Even when its -17 degrees, i'll only use the heating in the evening (certainly not at night, and not when im at work). |

I put the ondol on last night, and woke up this morning to see my dog sprawled across on of the hotter points of the floor, with a happy dog grin. I usually don't use it much, but I foresee some expensive utilities bills this winter. How could I deny the pooch such a simple pleasure? |

I haven't used my heating yet, but candles do seem like a good idea. |

Oh, my sweet summer child," Old Nan said quietly, "what do you know of fear?
Fear is for the winter, my little lord, when the snows fall a hundred feet
deep and the ice wind comes howling out of the north. Fear is for the long
night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and little children
are born and live and die all in darkness while the direwolves grow gaunt and
hungry, and the white walkers move through the woods |
