Korea is a signatory to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms Of Racial Discrimination. Korea signed on 8th August, 1978, and ratified it on 5th December 1978.

On 5th March 1997, Korea made the following statement regarding the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination the enforcement mechanism for this convention:

No laws against racial discrimination? I didn't know. I guess I figured they were there, but just unenforced as so many laws seem to be.

That's strange because I recently read an article in the same paper that boldly stated that there is no racism in Korea. Where's that Calender fella right now?
I don't think this kind of outrageous xenophobia is unique to Korea, but it is still quite sad.

While I certainly agree that it's terrible that this woman had to experience this, I'm also somewhat bothered by the article/picture that the Korea Times has used here. Why is the fact that she is a Korean citizen important? Would it be somehow "less bad" if they had denied entry to someone who was actually (legally) a foreigner? Because that's what the article seems to imply. I realize that mentioning her nationality and getting her to pose for a photo with her Korean passport makes the story much more sensational, but it also confuses the real issue in my opinion. This sort of discrimination is wrong no matter what your nationality may be.

Korea seems like such a backward country when you hear reports that people believe you can catch AIDS from sharing a hot tub. This is 2011 FFS. What next? You can cure AIDS by eating kimchi? Oh, wait..

In 7 yrs heare I have never been refused entry to a sauna in any part of this country. (Though I have been refused entry to a swimming pool for not having a swimming cap even though I had a grade zero ball head at the time, but that's another topic...)

I know of one caucasion friend who has non contagious psoriasis on his legs and was told he had to leave a sauna, but that's all (not that I think that is okay, as he explained that it was non contagious.)

I don't know, this thread feels incomplete without someone popping in to remind us all of the American south in the 1950s, apartheid South Africa, the genocide committed in Tasmania or current day Israel. Perhaps we should be thinking about what the Belgians did in the Congo too for an extra dose of white man guilt.
