Like Folgers or Maxwell House - a reasonable amount for a reasonable price.

I know COSTCO has their own, but I dont particularly enjoy it.

And the price of the ground beans at the boutique-y type places and franchises is too high.

I used to be able to get tubs of Folgers at Dongdaemun, but that supply line seems to have dried up.

I've ordered some on Gmarket, but would prefer to be able to go out and buy it if need be.

Have you seen any Folgers for sale in Seoul?

Homeplus carries six or seven lines of Tesco branded ground coffee at pretty reasonable prices.

I'm pretty sure that's instant coffee, which is different than ground coffee.

Me too, I like Folgers as a decent morning standby that doesnt break the bank [tho my local shop upped a kilo to 23000 recently].

Try mom&pop shops that have like one small corner of imported stuff -- I bet you'll find a source. You could even request it if you're a regular. I think the shop I go to stocks it mainly just for me. Its still being distributed but the big chains seem to have their own favored brands.

I haven't been there in a while, but I do remember them selling Folgers at the Shinchon gray market by exit 8 of Shinchon Station.

Starbucks sells their own coffee. I believe it's all beans, but you can buy the grinders there, too. There might be some pre-ground as well. I can't remember, but I know most every store has this.

Doesn't Costco have 3lb cans of Folgers?

The other option is a website like

http://www.megacoffee.co.kr/

who will deliver you 1kg of quite decent ground coffee for around 30,000.

No it's ground coffee. My homeplus has a similar selection. They have two versions, ground and unground, with identical packaging. Some homepluses have a grinder in-store, which they may chastise you for using on your own, but who cares?

I've also seen a decent selection at lotte mart in Seoul Station. They don't carry big tubs like back home, but there's plenty to choose from...

the homeplus stuff is definitely ground coffee. i used to buy it all the time.

the grand mart in sinchon sells the giant foldgers tubs for under 6K. i was shocked how cheap it was. not the best tasting stuff, but it lasts forever and satisfies my caffeine needs.

if it's too far out of your way, maybe invest in a grinder. they're not all that expensive and the grocery stores tend to have a larger selection of beans rather than ground coffee.

I prefer using a grinder. I like the smell of fresh ground coffee and think it makes a better tasting cup of coffee.

I agree. Grinding the beans fresh each morning (or the night before) takes only a few seconds and the result is much more satisfyint, plus Costco offers several varieties of beans at very reasonable prices.

Most local independent coffee shops will sell you beans and grind them. Yes, it can get expensive, but if you develop a relationship with them (even visiting them once a week and buying a 4,000 won cafe mocha), they will hook you up. There is a great little place near my school that sells amazing coffee and I buy my ground coffee from them. Costco and other said places sell more coffee for cheap, but I don't mind spending more money at these smaller places because I like to support them. Also, if you buy whole beans from these smaller places, you can buy grinders at Lotte Mart, Homeplus, etc. and grind them yourself.

Buying a cheap blade grinder will get worse results than buying pre-ground from a store.

Blade grinders chop up the coffee. Not grind.

If you don't want to shell out for a burr grinder then it's better to just buy pre-ground.

In that case I advise everyone to stay away from the Tesco instant coffee I've been buying for the past couple of years. It's very "gritty" and doesn't dissolve. Laughing

But seriously, they have lines of Kenyan, Java, Colombian, Brazillian, "Original", "Italian" and "French" (one or two lines are usually out at any given time) in coarse grounds, plus a fine-ground expresso. Runs around 5 - 7k for a half-pound bag. Italian hits the spot for me, although the French also comes in a one-pound size which is good value. IIRC they also had a fair trade blend last time I was there.
