Urgent advice needed...I have been offered a position in a small hagwon and I have just been waiting for documentation to come through.
This has taken a good while as it was lost in transit but it has finally came. The position was for the end of this month and they have been incredibly patient with me throughout. But as the time has came closer I've been getting cold feet about this position, basically the contract is missing anything to do with pension contributions and that is the major sticking point. As I am from the UK the pension thing does not bother me as such.
My recruiter says '3.3% is the not exact rate, and this rate can be different by years.
i think it's little less than that now.
the school will deduct tax what the government asks, so they can put the rate as the rate that government asks.
about pension, you can't get return the pension back, and you still want that??
most of UK teachers don't want pension , so they can save money.'
This all sounds slightly off to me and my gut is saying this could be a bad move. What do you guys think? Is this common practice or is it a ticket to a crummy job? |

P.S. I've re-posted the contract on the contract thread for someones consideration. Basically am I over-reacting here or should I stay away? |

My understanding is that people from the UK get the money transferred, whereas people from the US have to "cash in" when they leave.
As for the tax issue, I'll let others comment. I am not too clear what rate to expect. Just like a schedule, I would ask to speak with a current teacher and find out what deductions are being taken out. |

It is a typical hagwan job.
They will likely deliver on everything they promise. (air, pay, housing, severance).
They probably won't deliver on NPS or NHIC (medical - probably they pay 1/2 of your minor medical bills rather than real insurance - stay away from the front of buses).
You won't get everything you are legally entitled to as an employee (under the labor standards, national pension, and national health acts) but the job itself is probably OK.
Get a backup set of documents and go for it.
If it goes well then do your year and look for something better.
If it goes south, pull a runner (leave to cancel your visa, return as a tourist and try again.)

I'm a brit and I actually told my last employer that if they were happy not paying it, I was too. No point both of us throwing 90k down a black hole every month.
I have heard that it is not possible to do this now (and I WAS illegal when I did do it) as pension and national helth are under theumbrella of the same agency now, so if you are paying one and not the other - they will get wind of it.
I'm sure the average hakwan owner will find ways round that though. |

But the 90,000 they "throw" each month becomes yours when you leave. It's extra money. You put in a pound, they put in a pound, you get 2.
Are you saying they would just pay you a higher salary? |
