I just got to Korea three weeks ago and need to go to the embassy. So I made an appointment and now I get an email telling me to be on time and all that. It also says that I can't bring a cell phone into the place. Is this true? Do I need to leave the cell at home? I'll be going directly from work and really don't want to have to leave it there. Any knowledge about this?

US Embassy in London doesn't allow cellphones in the building, so I guess Seoul is no different. You'll have to leave it somewhere. Try a locker in a metro station or something. |

As you go through security, they will ask for your cell phone, which they will hold for you while are there. As you are leaving, you get it back. Very simple procedure. |

Whats the rationale? Canadian embassy doesnt care if you have a phone in your pocket. |

Actually seems sensible, phone could be a weapon or could be a device to circumvent security. Canada does not have to worry about this because no one where or what Canada is.
Also a phone might interfere with the brain rays that they use to control u.s |

Maybe they're afraid of people using cell phones to take pictures or record conversations. |

No, they would obviously lie to you in their email.
I seriously wonder what is wrong with people. |

They'll hold it in a locker for you. No worries. It's the same at the British embassy, though security is slightly less high tech there! |

The Canadian embassy has the same policy if you ever go anywhere past the main lobby/immigration/councillor affairs sections |

I have a cousin who used to work for the U.S. State Department. When she was at work, then she had to check her phone in before she started work. So, for the Embassy to have that policy doesn't surprise me. So, if you work for the State Department, then you have to check your cell phone in before you work. |

Mostly for surveillance and electronic espionage threats. Pretty much any device that can transmit or receive digital signals has to be checked. Laptops, even iPods from what I've heard now. |

Thanks all (except to Dahu, the sarcastic ass). Just wanted to make sure I didn't need to leave it at home. |
