That's right. I was fired one week ago and I've already got a new job...and some say things like "you can't get a job in Seoul if you are over the age of 35" and that it's "an employer's market."
So for those of you who are still searching, be encouraged. I now have a better schedule and paycheck! |

Instead of bending over and taking it, you took charge of the situation and did the right thing. It's this kind of personal traits that get you places with better opportunities.
Well done! |

congratulations.
may I ask what was key in you finding the right job for you?
just getting out there knocking on doors?
a good recruiter?
or previous networking and knowing the "right people"?
(obviously we're talking about a hagwon here, right?) |

I used a total shotgun approach using my network and posting a resume on Dave's. It was stressful, but successful. The fact that I'd successfully completed two previous contracts and had taken it upon myself to earn a CELTA certification this summer didn't hurt me, especially since I owned up to my mistakes and expressed my preference for working with children in a very positive manner. |

Congratulations!
What this shows is that there are jobs out there. Especially if you have experience. Also that age doesn't matter.
Illysook's other thread shows you can be picky as well.
As long as you are already in Korea you still have a chance of finding a good job.
Most of the people complaining are like me... poor saps who went home and then thought it would be easy to come back... I really miss Kimchi. |

Glad to hear it. That confidence to get things done usually will come from experience and knowing the market. A nebie may not know all their rights.
Still people's experiences can be different. If you have either no or little debt, can afford to be unemployed for a short time, and can be extremely transient, it's best for showing this take no sh!t attitude.
But, either way good for you. |

I am confused on one thing, though. If you're fired, do you need a Letter of Release to get another job or is this the visa run? |

Exactly. Hinderances in getting an esl job in rok
1. Not white.
2. Male.
3. Over 30
4. Combination of above
5. the above plus not in country.
Or something like that. |

Congrats!
about the "female only" thing. there are lots of schools who prefer guys.
my last hagwon used to try to make the foreign staff 50/50 but found the students actually like guys better and they only hire men now i hear.
my current public school job would only me hire if i was a guy. my boss insists the kids are more curious about western guys than girls. i also had another PS job interview that only wanted a male teacher.
i'm just saying, being a guy could play into your favor too...
i don't read too much into the stereotypes, a lot is luck. |
