Korea generally. Japan is hard to save.
Taiwan possibly.
The answer really is Korea. |

Depends on your level of qualification.
For entry level - Korea, but Shanghai (not the rest of China) is fast catchign up.
In Korea on 2.3mil you can save about 1mil - 1.2mil a month without oo much hassle. You might teach 30 hrs a week though.
In Shanghai for between 16 - 22 hrs a week of teaching you could save probably 900k won eqvt on a 13.5 rmb salary.
Get ot and you'll probably surpass you Korean savings potential.
Japan is flooded and Taiwan for entry level is not a popular choice.
I am entry level too and through my research it's Korea first and Shanghai second. |

Outdated information, brah.
The Japanese currency is strong. The Korean currency is weak.
One can SAVE $2000 (USD) a month in Japan. |

True dat, not sure about the 2000usd figure on a 250k yen salary for an entry level job, but I've heard you can save mroe there at the moment on that salary than you can on a 2.3mil salary in Korea.... |

How does that work then? A quarter of that will go on housing, tax is something like 10% and everything else is more expensive in Japan from what I've heard. I'm considering Japan as my next teaching destination, so that'd be great if true. |

Correct. And that is what matters.
Despite the myth (among people in Korea) that it is impossible to save money in Japan, the savings there is actually better than the savings in Korea.
But Japan takes some ambition to set onesself up in, something that many of the ESL workers in Korea do not have. (Apparently.) |

Not true. Food (meat, fruit, etc.) is less expensive. Also, pretty much anything imported could be less expensive, as Korea has very high tariffs on foreign goods. |

I'll assume you mean Asia in the American sense of the word because Saudi dumps on Korea in terms of savings |

I also believe Japan is now the best for saving with it's present exchange rate. |

As the above poster makes clear - this has not been the norm and is due to and reliant upon their current state of the currency. |

Actually very true. I lived in Tokyo.
If you wanted some decent cherries in summer you'd better be prepared to shell out between 15,000-20,000won for about 300 grams.
Simply getting around the subways will take a good chunk out of everyday expenses. For instance, if you live in a suburb of Tokyo like Kichijoji and have an interview in a downtown area like Ochanomizu, you'd pay about 8-9000won just commuting, more if you wanted to meet a friend afterwards in Shibuya (at least 5000won more); people often are compelled to make their plans according to which stations are more feasible economically. And don't even think about a taxi. Simply sitting your tush down will set you back roughly 11,000won, and the meter hasn't even begun running yet.
Then there are the "ku" taxes, the money you pay to live in wherever your residence is located. Rent is substantially higher unless you don't mind a shoebox which make officetels look like luxury mansions (if you want your own place get ready to plunk down 3 months rent as deposit plus another months' rent as "thankyou" money to the landlord, which he keeps).
The list of inordinate expenses goes on. And we haven't even gotten into how radiation has turned up in the food and water.
Now if you don't mind actually not being able to save that much, will gamble on the radiation, and actually like having a life, then Japan has a cultural life unparalleled in Asia, and arguably the world (if you fancy aesthetics), and you could gorge yourself silly on the attractions to be found in Tokyo and Kyoto alone, plus they actually have music (not in the pop charts, more undergroundish) which doesn't suck and has inspired everyone from David Bowie to Sonic Youth. |
