I renewed my passport at the embassy in Seoul a couple of months ago, I don't think it'll matter what your visa status is. Look up the embassy online and give them a call or drop in during operating hours, it should be relatively straight forward, though you'll likely need to fill in a statutory declaration in lieu of guarantor form, which you will need to get from the embassy. |

Visa status (E2, B2, etc) is not an issue as long as you are legal.
You will need your current passport, birth certificate and 1 or 2 other supporting pieces of ID.
Fill in the application. Make the statutory declaration in lieu of a guarantor. Pay the fees (just under 200k won) and wait a few weeks for your new passport to arrive.
(you will need 4 references who have known you for more than 2 years and are NOT family members - they will check them, they don't have to be in Korea).
You'll also need your "permanent" addresses for the last 5 years.

I just did this 2 months ago in Busan....
You basically need to account for your location for the last 5 years with no gaps.
You will need all you addresses for the last 5 years.
AND all your employment addresses and phone numbers for the last 5 years.
If you spent time travelling you can just say that (may - July 2009 - travelling - Thailand, Vietnam)
You can get pics done at any photo shop in the city.
Good luck! |

This may depend entirely on the applicant, but I have renewed my passport twice whilst in Korea and both times none of my references have ever been called/contacted.
This is mostly irrelevant because lying on your passport application its probably a pretty stupid thing to do. |

Only half of my references were contacted, oddly not the 2 on my passport application, but the two on the stat. declaration...

While I agree it'd be tremendously stupid to lie, I also think it'd be funny if someone was stupid enough to lie and ended up getting caught. Of course on the other hand it'd it'd be kind of disturbing if some managed to get away with lying on the application... |

I'm going to try and renew mine on Friday. I'm really nervous because I DON'T have any of the extra ID they want, just passport, birth certificate, and an expired driver's licence [sic]. (The directions say it has to be valid.)
Hopefully it will just go through. I tried to renew it (the DL) but they wanted me to sign a residence form which would leave me wide open to being forced to pay Canadian income tax on my Korean salary. |

Let us know how it goes... I'm in the same situation (just an expired licence). I have a another passport, but not sure if it will work if it's not a Canadian gov. document. |

SIN card and ARC work (they are what I used). I don't have a lot of valid Canadian ID left either (all are long since expired).
SIN, B/C, ARC, passport, Korean D/L.

For anyone who has done it recently, how long did it take to get your passport back?
I'm finally going on Monday, but I'll need my passport back before the end of November to renew my visa. |

15-21 days. They will tell you 21 days but it only took 2 weeks for my daughter's new passport.

Processing times
The abroad passport service standard for completed applications is 15 business days.
Complexity of routine verifications and security checks leads to longer processing times.
If you require a passport in exceptional circumstances, contact the nearest Government of Canada office that provides passport services.

If you continue up the same street the embassy is on (heading away from city hall) there's a photo shop about a block past on the left on the 2nd floor. The guy understands the picky conditions the embassy puts on photos & did a good job for me. Sorry, I dont know his hours exactly. I had mine taken maybe 10am. |
