Mostly Straight, Most of the Time

http://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/mostly-straight/

Im not sure theres a name for what I am, says Dillon, a college hockey player. Welcome to the world of the mostly straights.

Dillon, a college varsity hockey goalie, is an eager volunteer for our interview. In fact, he so loves telling his story that he stays beyond the 90 minutes he believes it will take, and offers to come back for the chance to talk some more. When we reschedule, hes thrilled, and shakes my hand and thanks me four times in the process of leaving.

Besides being remarkably polite, Dillon is talkative, self-aware, and reflective, with an engaging smile and an at-ease quality. Nothing he says feels rehearsed. Its as if each topic brings forth another triumph, as if hes discovering his life as he reflects on the questions.

When eventually asked about his sexuality, Dillon isnt fazed. Though he wants to *beep* lots of girls before graduation, hes not entirely heterosexual. Im not sure theres a name for what I am, he says. He wants this process, this interview, to help him figure it out...

Nothing new about it. The Kinsey scale comes to mind, but I'm sure there are probably older references to varying degrees of sexual orientation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_scale

Rating Description
0 Exclusively heterosexual
1 Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual
2 Predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual
3 Equally heterosexual and homosexual (bisexual)
4 Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual
5 Predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual
6 Exclusively homosexual
X Asexual

Yeah, the Kinsey scale's been around for over 60 years. Nice to know you finally found it even if it has received criticism.

Now, did you bother to read the article? The author clearly makes a distinction between garden-variety bisexuality and this.

As does the Kinsey scale. I read the article and fail to see anything revolutionary in terms of behavior, what's revolutionary is that society is accepting enough of homosexuality to allow someone like Dillon to say he might be into guys, whereas that wouldn't have been the case two decades ago, and probably not even a decade ago.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I can't think of many people I've known who were entirely bisexual. Most bisexuals tend to gravitate towards mostly hetero or mostly homo but not exclusively either one.

In my experience, lots of guys are mostly straight, but few will admit publicly to even one small chink in their totally straight armor. I base this on observations gleaned from 20 years of being a mostly gay guy, but my most recent observation is that, here in Korea, the witching hour in any public sauna is after midnight. Apparently, every Korean man knows that if he wants to get a little fun from a receptive partner, all he has to do is show up in the sleeping area of a public sauna. They're mostly straight. Wives, girlfriends, kids, whatever, these guys show up, loaded for bear. 'cause every once in a while, they like what they can get from a guy. It's the same thing in the West. This fiction about East is East and West is West (i.e., you are either Gay or you are not) is just that. Total fiction. Some of the best sex I've ever had has been with "straight" guys who were not in the least bit affectionally oriented toward same-sex relations, but didn't mind the physical fun they could have. (No kissing, please.)

This is certainly true in the Middle East as well. In Turkey, most of the men I've been with were essentially straight guys who would take some lovin from whoever offered it, whether male or female. Since women are expected to be virgins when they marry it's mostly male.

Yeah, "mostly straightism" happens far more often in cultures where female virginity is a prime virtue. I've had my fun with mostly straight Turks, too.
