I'd also like to know what dolls are popular here, because my niece is always asking for one. |

Toy dolls do not seem nearly as popular in Korea as it is in the U.S. The only place I found anything interesting was in a few shops in Insa-dong. They carried a line of dolls (perhaps Jenny?) in traditional Korean garb and separate Korean outfits could be bought. More importantly, the clothes seemed to fit Barbies and were reasonably priced (IIRC, around 5,000-8,000 won). I think the dolls were around 10,000-15,000.
After buying about $250 worth of dolls and clothes for presents, the shop lady next door told me that I got ripped off and that she would have given me around $40-$50 off my purchase price, so make sure to shop around and bargain if you're into that. Given that they were at Insa-dong, I bet that Namdaemun would also carry the same items for wholesale prices.
I may have some of those dolls left if you're interested in seeing pics of what they look like. |

I've heard that there is a Toys R' Us here somewhere and I imagine that they have the same kinds of toys that other children around the world play with but the most popular gift items for children here are education related. That's why you almost never see a plain yellow pencil here. Pens, pencils, erasers, and the like are highly decorated with whatever is popular at the moment. Right now it's Angry Birds and you can find everything from pencils to plushies for not a whole lot of money. School aged kids back home would love these things as well, but not as rabidly as they do here. |
