I am moving to South Korea soon, and I would like to watch a few good movies that show Korean culture, how it is to live there, etc. Anybody have any good recommendations?

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance are all very good. But if you've only got time for one, choose Oldboy - superb.

I love The Host/괴물. It's probably not the best movies for lessons on Korean culture but great for entertainment value.

I really loved 똥파리 (Breathless). It gives you a really gritty look at Korea, but it's cool.

Also 아저씨 (The man from Nowhere) is pretty good.

Oldboy is a must.

Peppermint candy, also highly recommended. Peppermint Candy is about all the people who are middle aged now, and when you get here it's hard to understand them. This movie gave me some more of an idea of why the act they way they do.

I'd go with "Chingu" and "Brotherhood of War".

I say "Ajeossi" was a stupid, cliched attempt at an action movie. Won Bin hardly makes a convincing assassin.

I've noticed a big gap in what Koreans like of Korean cinema and non-Koreans like. "Save the Green Planet" is well liked by expats but not at all by Koreans.

Well, if you want some idea of what your life will be like, you could always check out Please Teach Me English 영어 완전 정복.

It's a romantic comedy that takes place in an adult hogwon. As far as I know, it's the only Korean movie that has a foreign teacher as a major character.

These are both solid, tight movies. Old Boy is a classic, of course.

Tae-guk-gi (Brotherhood of War) was decent, but drags on quite a bit and gets too "Han/Jeong" weepy for me at times.

Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Chingu

As someone mentioned there is a big gap of what foreigners like and what Koreans like. Any movie that reveals the dirty secrets of Koreans is often not liked by Koreans.

Yeah, like "The President's last bang" (English title) or 그때 그사람들 about Park CHung Hee's assassination. I thought it was pretty interesting. My favorites are "PLease teach me ENglish", "Oldboy", and my absolute favorite of all time is "Memories of murder". Song Kang-ho is a superb actor, one of my favorites. From playing a gangster to a small town detective to a north korean soldier in "JSA", he can play all sorts of roles. Same with Cha Seung-won who starred in "My teacher, Mr. Kim", another great actor who played in a recent tv series. For more reviews on Korean movies, check out http://www.koreanfilm.org/ It's got probably the most comprehensive korean film reviews of any english website you can find. Of course, you can watch them on mysoju.com to name one website.
