Quote:
Police will dispatch 1,000 officers to a massive speed-dating event on Christmas Eve organized via Facebook, citing fears that women could be subjected to sexual harassment.

The event takes place simultaneously in 14 locations, including Yeouido in Seoul and Gwangalli in Busan. It was suggested by a young Facebook user on Nov. 3, and thousands of people responded.

The initial plan was to hold it in Gwanghwamun Plaza, but as numbers mushroomed, the venue had to be moved to Yeouido Park and more venues secured in other provinces. So far some 21,000 singles have said they want to join.
Police expect about 10,000 in Yeouido alone. To prevent crimes such as pickpocketing and sexual harassment, 400 officers will be sent to Yeouido and 600 elsewhere.

The organizers planned to line up men and women in two rows and change partners at their command, but this was deemed a violation of urban park regulations, so instead participants will simply mill around and ask for a date when they spot someone they fancy by saying, "Did you come here for a walk?"

The dress code is white for single men and red for single women, with non-singles identifying themselves in green.

Police said they cannot ban the event, which is legally speaking "in the nature of a festival," but to prevent crimes and keep order, officers will be stationed across the venues.

Some expect participation will not live up to the hype due to the subzero temperatures and online threats of sexual harassment. Police say they plan to "educate" adolescents before the event and reinforce patrols in nightlife districts.

Meanwhile, the Yeouido Park administration has separately decided to ban the event because of the accident risk and is threatening to sue the organizers if it goes ahead.

Big crowds rush to mass blind date

Males outnumber females

By Yun Suh-young

Single men appeared to be more desperate than their female counterparts to find a partner before Christmas.

On Monday, when the Mass Dating was held at Yeouido Park in Seoul, about 90 percent of the participants were men.

According to real-time messages uploaded online by people at the event, the proportion of attendees in the park was made up primarily of police followed by pigeons, men, reporters, vendors and finally women.

Much to their dismay, many men failed to find a partner at the park, despite enormously high enthusiasm for the occasion.

There are so many men here it looks like a military training session, said a blogger. Another tweeter by the ID: @sangria*** said, There are more police and pigeons here it looks like they are confronting each other.

The event was finally held at Yeouido Park despite controversy between the organizers and park officials on whether it was against the law to hold it at the park.

The event was first suggested by a 24-year-old college student using the ID: You have starting dating on Facebook to help singles find partners on Christmas Eve.

The student, Yoo Tae-hyung, and a friend, pushed through with organizing the event although representatives of Yeouido Park, the chosen venue, strongly protested against it being held there, claiming that it was against the law on city parks.

Yoo denied the claims saying that the event would be held in the form of a flash mob and was therefore not an illegal rally.

The event started from 3 p.m. Monday at the park. Those who came to the park wore either white or red clothing. The dress code was set for the participants so that they can easily recognize each other. Male participants had to wear white and female participants red.

The original plan was for men and women to stand across from each other at the park and run toward each other until they find a match and walk off hand-in-hand. However, due to concerns from the public and the police regarding possible sexual harassment and other criminal activities, the plan was changed so that participants walked towards each other in lines until they found a person they wanted to be with.

As of 4 p.m., about 1,000 people gathered in the park which was dubbed the mass dating zone.

lol, I'm married thank God. Even if I wasn't I would show up to this pathetic sausage fest. All the guys were identified by their white clothing? They should have went with a sandwich board with "I'm a virgin who couldn't get laid back home" written all over it.

LOL at the "sexual harrassment" excuse.

They just don't like the idea of this kind of thing taking-off, and damaging some rich, influential person's business prospects, I imagine.

Looks like fun! Darn, I missed it! Laughing

Freezing temperatures and a sea of dudes pushing and shoving to surround a few chicks to harass them into giving phone numbers.

I wonder if the "police" got in on the action as well...

"Hey! Leave her alone!"
"Thanks, officer."
"Whatever. Give me your phone number or I'll let them horde you again."
