Anyone out there working here or used to? Can you give me the scoop on the position as foreign "professor" on the credit based courses? |

RUN the other way!
I didn't work there, but I interviewed with them. Their head teacher is one of the most belligerent FTs I've ever met. If the FTs are that bad, imagine what the KTs must be like.
I've seen their ad on Dave's quite frequently. They obviously have trouble finding / retaining foreign teachers. |

Agreed.
I had an M.A. friend who worked there. She quit after 2 months. We worked at Daegu U togther for a year, before they built the new dorms and offices... and that was a craphole. So, goes to show you what Kyungbook is like. |

I concur with the posts above. Although I never worked there, I knew people who did. The claimed to be overworked especially for a university position. But, all you have to do is look at their ads to see what conditions are like.

The students are great. I'll repeat: the students. Overzealous libel laws discourage me from relaying my other thoughts on KNU- but that in itself should say something. |

Unfortunately what I've heard is much along the lines of the above. It's a shame because they have several of the most interesting foreign professors in Korea (Garrigues and Finch) and a lot of great students, including some of my former HS students. |

Dr. Garrigues is not an EFL instructor, his terms and conditions of employment would be much different. |

Interesting stuff. Well the position is teaching freshmen. I mentioned it to an acquaintance who is a KOTESOL veteran and a university teacher in Daegu.
She poured cold water all over the opportunity by saying that although no teaching of children is involved or split shifts - it is, in her opinion, a glorified hagwon job because it involves 20 hrs per week (9am - 6pm / no office hours) and is in the Language Education Centre rather than in the Department of English.
It has 8-10 weeks vacation in practice (although a minimum of 6 in the contract), 2.2m per month and there is a housing allowance (important as you'd never want to live in a 10 pyung on-campus apartment)
KNU seems to have a great reputation and having worked in local hagwons I know that most kids and their moms want to go there if they can't get into somewhere in Seoul and by all accounts the students there are great.
But it's true that the most desirable colleges for students do not always offer the best terms for their language instructors.
I've yet to hear anyone say anything very positive - are there any people out there with nice things to say about KNU based on a recent experience, rather than from years ago and second hand?? |

My good friend works there now. The Freshman program is still awful, worse every year.
Why does he still work there?
He's too busy/disorganized to apply elsewhere. That's his excuse. Loves the students- hates the administration. |
